These ergonomic adjustments can help minimize awkward posture, but they are not a guaranteed way to prevent or treat back pain.
Adjust your chair to support your body
Start with the chair, then check whether the desk and equipment still let you sit comfortably. OSHA describes a well-designed, properly adjusted chair as an essential part of a computer workstation. Its chair guidance recommends adjusting the seat and backrest to fit the user.
- Set the backrest to support the natural curve of your lower back. If your chair lacks lumbar support, OSHA notes that a removable lumbar support cushion is one option.
- Adjust seat height so your feet rest flat on the floor. If you cannot do that and reach the desk comfortably, use a stable footrest.
- Choose a seat depth that does not press against the backs of your legs.
- Keep your shoulders relaxed and elbows near your body. Armrests should support your lower arms without pushing your shoulders up or preventing you from moving close to the desk.
If you are choosing a replacement chair, compare fit and adjustability—including lumbar support position, seat height and depth, and backrest movement. OSHA advises trying chairs before purchase; it does not endorse a brand or say that an expensive chair is necessary.
Bring the keyboard and mouse within easy reach
Sit close enough to use the keyboard and mouse without leaning forward, reaching, or twisting. Keep them near one another and arrange frequently used items in your primary reach zone. OSHA’s desk guidance recommends enough clearance for your legs and room to change position; clutter under the desk can restrict both.

Check the desk height as part of this adjustment. If it forces you to raise your shoulders, reach up, or lean to type, a chair adjustment alone will not solve the mismatch. A keyboard tray or a different workstation arrangement may help. Keep the chair able to approach the desk without obstruction.
Center the monitor and set a comfortable viewing distance
Place the monitor directly in front of you, with the top of the screen at or below eye level. OSHA gives a preferred viewing distance of 20 to 40 inches (50 to 100 cm) in its monitor guidance. Adjust text size so you can read without leaning forward, and position the display in relation to your chair, desk, keyboard, and mouse rather than treating it as a separate adjustment.

What if the desk is too high or fixed?
Adjust the chair first so your back is supported and your feet are supported by the floor or a stable footrest. Then check whether your arms can reach the keyboard without raising your shoulders and whether your legs have clearance. If the desk still forces an awkward position, consider a keyboard tray or another workstation arrangement. OSHA also recommends an auxiliary full-sized keyboard and monitor when a laptop is used as the primary computer for intensive keyboard work; these accessories are not necessary for everyone.

After making adjustments, check the whole setup together. OSHA’s position guidance and evaluation checklist focus on facing the work straight on, keeping the torso vertical to slightly reclined, and supporting the back. Aim for a comfortable, supported position that you can vary during the day, not one rigid pose.

OSHA’s workstation materials describe how support and adjustment can minimize awkward posture and may help limit fatigue, strain, or discomfort. They are occupational guidance, not clinical trials demonstrating that a particular setup prevents or treats back pain, and they do not quantify how much a setup change reduces back strain.
