What Android’s built-in sound controls do
Android’s standard controls cover common audio streams: media, calls, ring, notifications, and alarms. The volume buttons adjust different levels depending on what you are doing; as Google explains, “When you press a volume button, the volume that changes depends on what you’re doing.” For example, while a movie is playing, the buttons change its media volume.
To adjust the available levels, Google documents this path: press a volume button, tap Menu, then move the sliders. The exact labels and steps can differ by Android version and manufacturer; some instructions on Google’s page apply to Android 12 and later. The expanded controls also offer mute and vibrate behavior, and Google describes choosing a Bluetooth media output when multiple Bluetooth devices are paired. What Sound Assistant adds on a Galaxy
Samsung describes Sound Assistant in the Galaxy Store as an “Advanced sound utility for your Galaxy.” Its listing includes individual application volume, finer volume adjustment, a floating equalizer, and customization of the volume panel. It also lists options such as changing the default volume step, using the volume keys to change media volume rather than ringtone volume, and selecting an app’s audio output between Bluetooth and the speaker from the floating panel.

Samsung’s listing claims 150 steps for its fine-volume feature. That is Samsung’s product description, not a comparative measurement against Android’s controls. The listing reports version 8.5.00.2 dated 2026-05-22, and warns that some devices may not be supported. Feature availability and interface can therefore depend on the Galaxy model and its software. Check the Sound Assistant Galaxy Store listing for current availability and details.
Sound Assistant or Galaxy Settings for audio routing?
Sound Assistant’s floating-panel output selector and Samsung’s Separate app sound setting address related but distinct routing needs. Sound Assistant’s listing describes switching an app’s output between Bluetooth and the phone speaker from its floating panel. Separate app sound is a Galaxy system setting that sends one selected multimedia app to an output different from the phone’s main output.

Samsung gives the example of playing music through a vehicle’s Bluetooth while navigation audio comes from the phone speaker. To set it up, go to Settings > Sounds and vibration > Separate app sound, enable the option, select the media app, and choose an output device. A Bluetooth device appears as an option while connected. Samsung’s UK Separate app sound instructions explain the routing example; that page was last updated on 2021-05-25, so menu details may differ on a current device.

Galaxy Settings also include sound-shaping and output options that are not simply Sound Assistant features. Samsung’s support guidance documents Equalizer, Dolby Atmos and Dolby Atmos for gaming, Adapt sound and a personalized hearing-profile flow, plus UHQ upscaler for wired earphones. It also describes Dual audio, which can send audio to multiple Bluetooth outputs on supported models.

These settings are model- and software-dependent. Samsung notes that some features are limited by hardware compatibility, and menus or screenshots may vary. Its Galaxy sound quality and effects guide explains the options; check your own phone’s Settings to see which are available.

Choose based on the control you need

How to decide on your phone
- Try the built-in panel first. Press a volume button, open Menu, and adjust the available sliders. If you only need routine stream volume, mute, or vibration, this may be all you need.
- Check Galaxy Settings for routing or sound effects. Look for Settings > Sounds and vibration and the relevant option, such as Separate app sound. Available names and features vary by model and software.
- Install or open Sound Assistant if a specific extra is missing. Use it for a supported app-by-app volume control, fine adjustment, customized panel, or listed floating-panel feature. Verify availability in the Galaxy Store and on the device rather than assuming every Galaxy phone has the same options.
