Usually, not on its own. AI virtual try-on can show a plausible image of a garment on you, but that image is not proof that the garment—or the size shown—will fit in real life. Visualizing appearance and predicting physical fit are different tasks: a useful fit estimate needs information about your body and the specific garment, as well as how you want it to sit.

What an AI try-on image can—and cannot—tell you

Image-based virtual try-on creates a picture of a person wearing a garment. Google describes its apparel tool as taking images of a person and a garment, then using generative AI to produce the combined image. The model aims to depict visual details such as folds, drape, cling, stretch, and wrinkles. That makes the result potentially useful for judging style and appearance; it does not mean the garment was physically tried on or that the image verifies a real-world fit. Google’s explanation of its virtual try-on approach

A visually convincing result can therefore still show the wrong size or an unrealistic fit. The 2025 Computer Graphics Forum paper notes that image-based methods can be built around fashion-model imagery and may generalize poorly to everyday shoppers. The authors explicitly say their visually plausible method does not validate garment-sizing suitability without actual user body measurements. They identify user measurements and measurements for each garment as a promising direction. The paper’s discussion of fit limitations

What a credible fit estimate needs

Fit depends on more than a person’s outline in a generated image. At minimum, a size estimate needs relevant information about the shopper and the exact item; it also needs to account for intended ease—the room between the body and the garment—and fit preference. A tool that has only a product photo and a person photo may render an outfit without having the measurements needed to judge whether that item in a particular size will fit.

  • Body inputs: Find out whether the system uses a generic figure, basic details, measurements, or a body scan/avatar, and which dimensions it represents.
  • Garment inputs: Check whether it knows measurements or fit data for the exact product and size, rather than relying only on an image.
  • Fit behavior: Look for information about fabric stretch, cut, ease, and whether you prefer a close, regular, or loose fit.
  • Evidence: Distinguish an independently evaluated accuracy result from a retailer’s own pilot or a research model tested on a limited dataset.
  • Scope: Ask whether the evidence applies to this garment category, size range, body type, market, and current version of the tool.

Even a body-measurement-based avatar is a representation, not a guarantee. Clothing labels are not a universal measurement system: the same label can correspond to different measurements between brands, categories, cuts, and markets, while shoppers also differ in shape and preferred fit. Some retailer tools add sizing signals beyond the image

Amazon

Amazon says its fashion features use customer profile and purchase information, summarize reviews about fit by body area and fabric stretch, and extract and standardize data from size charts. Those inputs may help explain a size recommendation, but Amazon does not provide an independent accuracy score for virtual try-on in the cited account. The approach is specific to the retailer and its available data. Amazon’s account of its shopping features

Zalando

Zalando describes size guidance that draws on product information, purchase and return behavior, customer fit feedback, and fitting-model assessments. Its virtual fitting room uses body measurements to create an avatar for comparing sizes. In a four-week 2024 test of selected Levi’s upper garments across 14 European countries, Zalando reported up to a 40% reduction in return rates, while noting that the result was limited by the testing phase. This is a company-reported pilot result—not a fit-accuracy rate or a result established for all clothes and shoppers. Zalando’s 2024 virtual fitting room test

In a later company overview, Zalando said its broader size and fit solutions prevented 8% of size-related returns overall in 2025. That figure applies to a portfolio of product-level recommendations and size flags, customer data and preferences, and the virtual fitting room; it is not an effect attributed to the avatar feature alone. Why published accuracy numbers are easy to misread

A 2025 Scientific Reports study of 677 participants examined clothing-size classification using anthropometric measurements from 3D body scans. It reported 89.66% accuracy for an SVM model and 68.97% for a PCA-SVM model on that study’s classification task; 35.45% of participants did not align with any specific sizing category. These are results for those models, measurements, participants, and task—not accuracy rates for consumer virtual try-on apps. The 2025 clothing-size study

A separate 2026 preprint argues that image-based try-on can produce a well-fitted-looking result even when a garment should look too large or too small. Its authors introduce a research dataset containing more than 1.13 million try-on image triplets accompanied by body and garment measurements. The dataset’s scale signals that fit-aware try-on is an active research problem; it does not establish that consumer tools already predict fit accurately. The FIT research preprint

How to use virtual try-on when choosing a size

  1. Use the image to judge appearance. Consider whether the color, style, and general silhouette appeal to you, but do not treat the rendered image as a physical fit test.
  2. Check the exact item’s size chart. Compare your measurements with the chart and garment measurements if the retailer provides them. A soft measuring tape can help you take body measurements, though it cannot tell you how a particular cut or fabric will feel or drape.
  3. Read item-specific fit feedback. Look for comments about the relevant body area, whether the item runs large or small, and how much the fabric stretches. General brand sizing may not predict an individual product’s fit.
  4. Account for your preference. A size that works for a close fit may not suit someone who wants extra room. Consider cut, fabric, and intended ease alongside the measurements.
  5. Separate the recommendation from its explanation. If a tool gives you a size, check what information supports it—such as item measurements, your measurements, fit reviews, or only the generated image.

Amazon describes size-chart and review features that surface some of these signals, while Zalando explains how measurements and fit preferences can contribute to personalized guidance. What either system can advise depends on the information available for the particular shopper and item. Amazon · Zalando

Is any virtual try-on tool proven to predict fit reliably?

The cited evidence does not establish a universal accuracy percentage for consumer virtual try-on, or independent head-to-head validation of named tools across garments, sizes, body types, and markets. Retailer-reported outcomes and research-model metrics answer narrower questions and should not be treated as a blanket guarantee. Until a tool is validated for the item and shopper in question, use its image as a visual reference and rely on product-specific sizing information for the decision.
