For most broiler pans, start with a warm water and dishwashing-detergent soak, then wash gently with a scrubber approved for the pan’s finish. Before using oven cleaner, an abrasive pad, a dishwasher, or the oven’s self-clean cycle, check the care instructions for both the pan and its grid: they may be made of different materials and have different limits.
Start with a detergent soak
- Check the care instructions. Identify the material or finish of the pan and grid, and follow the exact model’s manual if its directions differ from general advice.
- Separate the grid and contain the grease. Let hot parts cool slightly, remove the grid, and pour liquid grease into a suitable container rather than down the drain.
- Loosen the residue. Sprinkle dishwashing detergent over the pan, add warm water, and lay a damp cloth or paper towel over the grid. GE recommends this soak-first approach for its broiler pans and racks; its manual says, “Soaking the pan will remove burned-on foods.” (GE Appliances cleaning guidance; GE Appliances broiler-pan manual)
- Wash, rinse, and dry. Once the residue has softened, wash the parts using a tool approved for their finish. GE lists plastic scouring pads among its approved methods for its pans and racks.
GE does not specify a universal soak time, so let the residue loosen rather than relying on an exact number of minutes. Avoid putting a hot pan under cold water: All-Clad warns that a sudden temperature change can warp cookware. (All-Clad care and use)
Choose the cleaning method for each finish
The pan and grid may not have the same finish. Clean them separately when their care instructions differ; a method allowed for an enamel pan may not be safe for a chrome or nonstick grid.

Escalate cautiously if grease remains
If a detergent soak does not loosen stubborn grease, use only a scrubber or cleaner permitted for that part’s finish. A plastic scouring pad is an option in GE’s guidance, but compatibility still depends on the pan’s own instructions. Do not assume oven cleaner is safe across finishes, and do not mix cleaning products.

Do not put removable broiler parts through the oven’s self-clean cycle unless the manufacturer specifically permits it for that part. GE limits self-clean use to porcelain-enamel parts; it warns that metal pans and racks may warp and that residual grease may ignite at self-clean temperatures. (GE Appliances cleaning guidance)
For unusually heavy or carbonized buildup, consult the pan’s manual before trying a stronger chemical or more aggressive scrubbing. If its material or care rules are unclear, the safest next step is to identify the model or ask the manufacturer rather than guess.
