If Xbox Disc-to-Digital is not working, first check whether the game disc and console are eligible, then separate the digital-license claim from installing the game. Xbox says most—but not all—Xbox One and Xbox Series X game discs qualify. A standard disc installation alone does not prove that a digital entitlement was claimed.
How Xbox Disc-to-Digital is supposed to work
Xbox’s August 26, 2026 announcement describes the claim flow: insert a supported Xbox One or Xbox Series X game disc into a supported console and launch the game. The feature starts with thousands of titles, with more to be added over time; that approximate figure is not a guarantee that any particular disc qualifies. Xbox’s feature announcement
Think of the process as two separate outcomes: game data can be installed on the console, and a qualifying disc can be used to claim a digital license. One can happen without the other.
Check whether your console can read the disc
The feature is for supported Xbox One and Xbox Series X discs and consoles. Xbox Series S is digital-only and cannot read game discs. A digital-only Xbox Series X model also has no disc drive, so it cannot perform a claim that starts with inserting a physical disc. Xbox’s backward-compatibility information

- From the creators of Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption
- The deepest and most complex world Rockstar Games has ever created. 4K Ultra HD not available on Xbox One or Xbox One S consoles
- Covers a huge range of 19th century American landscapes
- Play as Arthur Morgan, lead enforcer in the notorious Van der Linde gang
- Interact with every character in the world with more than just your gun
If your console has no disc drive, there is no way to start this process on that console with a physical game disc. The official feature description does not establish another console as a supported workaround.
Confirm that the disc is eligible
“Most” does not mean all: Xbox says not every Xbox One or Xbox Series X disc can be converted. Microsoft’s usage rules say eligibility may vary for technical, licensing, publishing, or other reasons, and the list of eligible discs can change. If the console indicates that the disc does not support a digital license, the title may simply be ineligible rather than suffering an installation fault. Microsoft’s digital-goods usage rules

The official sources do not provide an exact public count of eligible titles or a complete per-title list. A general claim that a game is available for Xbox does not establish that its physical disc qualifies for this feature.
Tell a license claim apart from a game install
If the game downloaded but still asks for the disc
Installing game data from a disc is not the same as claiming a Disc-to-Digital entitlement. Xbox’s backward-compatibility FAQ explains that a disc game can download to console storage while still requiring the disc for conventional play. So an installed game that asks for its disc may be using the ordinary disc license, not a successfully claimed digital license. Xbox’s storage and disc-game explanation

If launching the game does not complete the claim
Verify that the console can read the disc and that the title is eligible, then use the described claim flow: insert the supported disc and launch the game. Do not assume that deleting or reinstalling game files will create a missing license; the available official material does not identify reinstalling as a license-claim fix.
Keep the qualifying disc after a successful claim
A Disc-to-Digital license is not an unconditional replacement for owning the disc. Microsoft says the digital license remains conditioned on continued possession of the qualifying disc; it may be revalidated and may be suspended or revoked if you no longer have the disc. The license also cannot be transferred separately from that disc. Do not sell or discard the qualifying disc on the assumption that the claim permanently frees you from it. Xbox says a claimed entitlement may enable Xbox Play Anywhere or Xbox Cloud Gaming where those services are supported. Those benefits are title- and service-dependent; the feature announcement does not promise PC access or cloud play for every eligible game. Xbox’s feature announcement
