Start with the anime if you want audiovisual performances and episode-based viewing; start with the manga if you prefer reading at your own pace and seeing the story in its original panel-based form. Neither format is a universal winner. Your best first step depends on how you like to experience a series—and what is available where you live.
How the Gintama anime and manga relate
Hideaki Sorachi’s Gin Tama manga began in Weekly Shonen Jump in 2004. The television anime premiered in Japan in April 2006, according to VIZ. The manga is complete: the official Gintama portal records its completion in 2019, and Shueisha’s series listing runs through collected Volume 77.

The official portal lists 367 television episodes through the anime finale in 2018. It also describes the 2021 film Gintama THE FINAL as depicting the original’s ending. Those figures establish the scale and endpoint of the anime, but they do not show exactly which manga chapters each episode adapts; the official sources cited here do not provide a chapter-by-chapter adaptation guide.
Choose by the experience you want
| If you value… | Start with… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| The original page and panel form, and control over your pace | Manga | A scholarly analysis of Gintama’s manga describes jokes that draw on panels, drawings, sound effects, page length, and awareness between reader and author. These are possibilities of the printed form, not simply a slower version of watching. |
| Audiovisual performance and episode-based viewing | Anime | It presents the series as television episodes, with performances and sound as part of the experience. The official franchise portal records 367 TV episodes. |
| English-language print | Check the current listing first | VIZ identifies Gin Tama, Vol. 1 as the series debut and provides a purchase option. That does not establish that its English edition covers all 77 Japanese volumes. |
| Streaming | Check your local catalog | Disney+ has a Gintama title listing, but a listing alone does not establish availability or completeness in every country. |
What the manga does differently
Reading the manga preserves the work’s original page-by-page construction and lets you decide when to pause or move on. That matters for jokes built around the page itself. A scholarly analysis hosted by Roskilde University’s research repository notes that characters refer to panel sequences, how scenes or characters are drawn, sound effects, and how many pages an event has continued. The format can make the reader’s awareness of the manga page part of the joke.

#1 Best Overall
Choose this route if you like reading in short or long sessions on your own schedule, or if you want to encounter the original manga rather than an adaptation. VIZ lists Gin Tama, Vol. 1 as the debut volume. Check the publisher’s current listing for language, edition, and availability before buying; the Japanese 77-volume run does not, by itself, confirm the extent of the English edition.

The anime turns the series into episode-based audiovisual viewing. That is the more natural entry point if performances, sound, and watching one installment at a time are more appealing to you than reading panels. The series has a substantial commitment: the official Gintama portal records 367 TV episodes, with the television series ending in 2018. The portal also says the 2021 film Gintama THE FINAL depicts the original ending.
Rank #2
Do not use the episode count as a substitute for a chapter map. The cited official sources do not document a complete episode-to-chapter breakdown, so they cannot establish a precise viewing point for switching between the anime and manga.

For the manga
- Use the current VIZ listing to confirm whether the English-language volume you want is available and which edition it is.
- Use Shueisha’s listing to verify the Japanese collected run, which reaches Volume 77; do not treat that as proof that another language edition is complete.
For the anime
- Search the streaming services available in your country. Disney+ has a Gintama title page, but catalogs differ by territory and can change.
- Confirm that the listing includes the episodes or films you intend to watch; a title page alone does not establish that the full series is available.
A simple starting decision
- Want to read the original work and set your own pace? Begin with the manga, starting at Volume 1.
- Prefer an audiovisual, episode-based route? Begin with the anime, after checking which episodes your local service carries.
- Unsure? Try the first available installment in the format you are more likely to stick with. There is no evidence-based universal winner, and the choice need not be a claim that one version is objectively better.
