No—not through Xbox’s disc-to-digital feature announced in August 2026. Xbox describes that feature for supported Xbox One and Xbox Series X discs, not Xbox 360 or original Xbox discs. Some older games can still be played from disc on newer Xbox consoles through backward compatibility, but the disc must remain inserted while you play.
What Xbox’s disc-to-digital feature covers
In its August 26, 2026 announcement, Xbox said that “Most XBOX One and XBOX Series X disc-based games support this new feature.” For an eligible game, you insert the supported disc into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X console and launch the game to claim a digital entitlement. Xbox said the physical disc continues to work as before, and digital benefits such as Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming apply where supported. Read Xbox’s announcement.

The announcement describes “thousands of titles” at launch, but that figure refers to titles in the new feature—not to Xbox 360 or original Xbox disc eligibility. Xbox does not include those older disc generations in its stated eligibility, so you should not expect to claim a digital copy by inserting one.
How to play an older disc on a newer Xbox
Xbox offers backward compatibility for select Xbox 360 and original Xbox games on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. When a compatible disc-based game is used, the console downloads game files to its storage; the disc still has to remain in the drive to play. Check the exact game in Xbox’s backward-compatibility catalog before relying on a disc, because support is title-specific. Xbox says backward compatibility is free for supported games.
#1 Best Overall
- Xbox One: Supports select original Xbox and Xbox 360 titles through backward compatibility; a compatible disc must stay inserted during play.
- Xbox Series X: Supports select older disc games through backward compatibility; choose a model with a disc drive if you want to use physical discs.
- Xbox Series S: Digital-only, with no disc drive, so it cannot read your Xbox 360 or original Xbox discs.
Backward compatibility is not a way to turn a disc into an independent digital license. It lets a supported console run certain older games while you own and insert the disc.
What happened to the Xbox 360 Store?
New purchases from the Xbox 360 Store on console and the Xbox 360 Marketplace stopped on July 29, 2024. Xbox said that previously purchased content would remain playable and available to re-download. It also said hundreds of backward-compatible Xbox 360 and original Xbox games and DLC would remain available to buy through Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox.com. Xbox’s Store update explains the distinction.

Buying a digital version from an Xbox storefront is separate from owning the disc: a store listing does not convert your disc into a digital entitlement, and availability applies only to titles Xbox offers through those storefronts.
Check before choosing a console or buying a game
- Search the exact title in Xbox’s backward-compatibility catalog.
- Confirm that your console can read discs. Xbox Series S cannot; for Series X, verify that the model you are considering has a disc drive.
- If the game is compatible and you are using a disc, keep that disc available: backward-compatible disc games require it to remain inserted during play.
- If you want to play without the disc, check whether Xbox currently sells a digital version of that specific game. A purchase would be a separate license, not a conversion of your disc.
A generic optical drive or disc-ripping device cannot claim an Xbox digital license under the feature Xbox described; eligibility is tied to supported titles and Xbox consoles.
Limits on older games’ online features
Xbox notes that original Xbox games on newer consoles do not provide the old Xbox Live multiplayer or in-game marketplaces. Offline multiplayer is supported when the original game included it. Online functionality can vary by game and publisher, so backward-compatible access does not guarantee that a title’s original online services still work.
