Then reduce unnecessary screen-on time, check which apps are using the battery, and use Battery Saver selectively. The exact controls and any runtime improvement depend on your phone and how you use it; official guidance does not establish a universal number of extra hours or percentage.
Choose the refresh-rate setting that fits the day
A higher refresh rate can make scrolling and animation look smoother, but it can also use more power. Adaptive mode is often a practical everyday compromise: it can use a high rate when appropriate and a lower one in less demanding situations. If runtime matters more than smoothness, choose a lower fixed rate where available.
Samsung Galaxy: Motion smoothness
Open Settings and search for Motion smoothness. Samsung’s supported Galaxy phones may offer these options:

Samsung notes that Power Saving mode sets the screen to Standard. Some devices also cannot combine 120 Hz with WQHD+ resolution. For model-specific details, see Samsung Canada’s Galaxy display-settings guide and Samsung US’s refresh-rate guide.

Google Pixel: Smooth Display
On supported Pixel models, go to Settings > Display & touch > Smooth Display and turn it off to reduce battery use. Menu availability depends on the Pixel model and Android version. Google documents this setting in its Pixel battery guidance.
Other Android phones
Search Settings for refresh rate, motion smoothness, or display. If Adaptive is available, try it first; for a day when runtime takes priority, select a lower fixed rate. Adaptive behavior is device- and content-dependent, so it does not mean every app will run at the display’s advertised maximum. Android Developers explains that Android 15 adaptive refresh rate, on devices that enable and implement it, can reduce time at high refresh rates by allowing lower default frame rates and matching the display rate to rendered content. Reduce power use from the screen
After choosing a refresh rate, make the screen turn off sooner and avoid more brightness than you need. These are simple, reversible adjustments; set them to a level that remains comfortable and readable.
- Lower brightness: Reduce it manually or use Adaptive brightness if it works well for you.
- Shorten screen timeout: Pick the shortest interval that suits your habits. Google gives 30 seconds as a Pixel example, not a universal requirement.
- Try Dark theme where available: Android and Pixel guidance lists it as a possible battery-saving setting. The effect depends on the device and display, so treat it as an option rather than a guaranteed major saving.
Google’s general Android battery guidance and Pixel battery guidance describe these controls; labels vary across manufacturers and software versions.

Find battery-hungry apps before restricting them
Check battery use before changing app permissions or background behavior. A single app with sustained activity may matter more than restricting apps indiscriminately.
On Pixel
Go to Settings > Battery > Battery usage to review listed apps. You can inspect or change background use for an app there. Google recommends leaving Optimized enabled for all apps unless there is a specific reason to change it.

On Samsung Galaxy
Review battery-usage details and screen-on and screen-off time in the battery settings. Samsung’s labels and paths can vary with model, carrier, and software version; its Galaxy battery guidance describes the relevant controls.
Restrict only apps that are genuinely using more power than you expect. Limiting messaging, navigation, or other time-sensitive apps can interfere with background updates or delay notifications.

Use Battery Saver when its tradeoffs are acceptable
Battery Saver is useful when your charge is low or you need the phone to last longer before you can recharge. Depending on the phone, it may reduce background activity, turn on Dark theme, limit visual effects or features, or affect network connections. Apps may update or notify you later. Samsung likewise warns that Power saving can affect performance and delay app updates or notifications. Turn it off again when those limits are no longer worthwhile. Limit demanding activities and unused connections when practical
Some tasks draw substantial power while they are running. When you need to stretch a low charge, consider whether you can postpone or shorten prolonged navigation, GPS use, video streaming, graphics-heavy or highly interactive games, camera use, calls while moving, or hotspot and tethering sessions. These are conditional high-drain activities, not features everyone needs to disable all the time. Turn off a hotspot or tethering when you are finished using it. Google lists these examples in its Android battery guidance and Pixel battery guidance.
Protect battery health separately from today’s runtime
Keeping a phone cool can help both present-day use and long-term battery health. Google says heat can make a battery drain faster even when the phone is not in use, and can damage it. Avoid leaving a hot phone in a hot environment or continuing an activity that is overheating it.
Charging limits are a different tradeoff from runtime-saving settings. On Pixel 6a and later, Google offers an 80% charge limit to help extend battery lifespan; having less charge available at the start of the day can also mean less immediate runtime. Pixel charging optimization can reduce time spent fully charged. These options and their availability are described in Google’s Pixel battery guidance.
There is no need to drain a phone from full to zero to “teach” it its battery capacity. For charging advice, Google recommends the power adapter supplied with the phone and suggests consulting the manufacturer for model-specific guidance; an unspecified charger is not a fix for battery drain.
