Choose Fedora Workstation for Fedora’s ready-to-use GNOME desktop and a live USB image you can try before installing. Choose Fedora Everything if you want to select packages during installation and can connect to Fedora’s software repository over the internet or through a local mirror. If you mainly want a desktop other than GNOME, check Fedora Spins first.
What’s the difference between Fedora Workstation and Everything?
They serve different purposes. Workstation is a curated Fedora desktop edition built around GNOME. Everything is an online installer that lets you choose software packages as you install; it is not a ready-made desktop experience equivalent to Workstation.
Fedora describes Workstation as suitable for general desktop use and developers, with ways to install apps from Fedora repositories or Flathub. Everything is for people who want more control over the package set at installation time.
Fedora Workstation vs. Everything at a glance
| Decision point | Fedora Workstation | Fedora Everything |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Fedora’s GNOME desktop edition, available as a live image. | An online installer with software-package selection during installation. |
| Network access during setup | The download is presented as a live ISO. Fedora’s page does not say that network access is required for the base installation. | Requires a working internet connection or a local Fedora repository mirror to retrieve packages. |
| Best suited to | People who want a curated desktop and do not want package selection to be the main installation task. | People who know what package set they want and are comfortable with the online installation workflow. |
| Other desktop environments | Workstation uses GNOME. Fedora also offers preconfigured alternatives as Spins. | Offers package choices, but Fedora’s cited pages do not establish it as the easiest route to every desktop environment. |
| Fedora 44 architectures listed on Fedora’s download pages | Intel/AMD x86_64 and ARM aarch64. | x86_64, aarch64, ppc64le, and s390x. |
Choose Fedora Workstation if you want a ready desktop
Workstation is the straightforward choice if you want to boot into Fedora’s GNOME desktop without assembling a package selection during setup. Its live image lets you start Fedora from a USB drive and try it before installing. After installation, you can add or remove applications through Fedora’s documented software sources, including Fedora repositories and Flathub.

#1 Best Overall
Fedora describes Workstation versions as receiving updates for approximately 13 months. That cadence can matter if you are planning how often to move to a newer Fedora release.
Choose Fedora Everything if you want package selection during installation
Everything is intended for an installation where you choose the software packages as part of the process. Fedora calls it an online installer: unlike the offline installer used by standard Fedora Linux releases, it retrieves software from a repository too large to include with the installer.
Rank #2
Plan for network access to Fedora’s repository or a local mirror. If you are unsure which packages you need, or you simply want a functioning desktop without making package choices the focus of setup, Workstation is the more direct starting point.
Do you need Everything to choose a desktop other than GNOME?
No. Fedora publishes Spins preconfigured with alternative desktop environments. The official Spins list includes options such as Xfce, Cinnamon, MATE, i3, and LXQt; the available list can change between releases. If your main goal is a particular desktop, compare the current Spins before choosing Everything. Fedora’s pages do not establish Everything as the easiest way to get every alternative desktop.

Current release, architectures, and system resources
Fedora’s download pages list Workstation 44 and Everything 44. The Workstation page gives April 28, 2026, as the release date. Architecture support differs between the two download pages, as shown in the comparison table; check Fedora’s current pages before downloading in case a newer release or different support list is available.
The Workstation download page gives a general recommendation of 40 GB of disk space and 4 GB of RAM to install and run most Fedora variants, and says doubling those amounts might provide a better experience depending on use. This is not stated as a minimum for every Everything installation or every workload.

Prepare installation media safely
- Pick the image that matches your goal. Use the Workstation live ISO for the standard GNOME desktop, or the Everything network-install ISO if you intend to choose packages and have repository access.
- Write the image to a USB drive. Fedora describes Fedora Media Writer as a way to write a live Fedora system to a flash drive. Fedora’s cited page does not prescribe a specific drive brand or capacity.
- Verify the download. Follow Fedora’s published checksum and signature instructions for the image you downloaded.
- For Everything, confirm repository access. Make sure the installer can reach Fedora’s repository, or that you can use a local mirror, before beginning package selection.
Which one should you install?
- Choose Workstation for Fedora’s standard GNOME desktop, a live try-before-install image, and a curated general-purpose starting point.
- Choose Everything when package selection during setup is intentional and you can provide online repository access or a local mirror.
- Choose a Fedora Spin when you want a preconfigured desktop other than GNOME.
