For scheduled, custom live channels built from media you already own, start with Tunarr or ErsatzTV Legacy. They are the scheduling layer: they turn a library into channels with a lineup and guide. Plex, Jellyfin, or Emby can supply the media, play the resulting channels, or do both, depending on the setup.
Which Plex alternative should you choose?
Tunarr is the stronger first option if you want several scheduling styles or flexibility in choosing a media source and playback client. ErsatzTV Legacy is worth considering if its existing workflow and documented client integrations fit your setup, or if you need its broad range of local media types. These are feature-based recommendations, not results of comparative performance testing.
| Your priority | Where to start | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Programs assigned to particular air times | Tunarr | It documents fixed-time schedules for programs assigned to specific start times. Tunarr documentation |
| Random variety with control over slots or blocks | Tunarr | Its Slot Editor supports sequential or random choices, and it also documents Block Shuffle. Tunarr documentation |
| A predictable repeating rotation | Tunarr | Cyclic Shuffle cycles through programming in a repeating pattern. Tunarr documentation |
| Local media in a wide range of formats | Compare both; check ErsatzTV’s local-library support | ErsatzTV documents local libraries for movies, shows, music videos, other videos, songs, images, and remote streams. ErsatzTV documentation |
| Plex as the media source or client | Either, after checking requirements | Tunarr supports Plex as a source and can expose channels through a simulated tuner. ErsatzTV’s Plex client setup requires Plex Pass and MPEG-TS. Tunarr documentation ErsatzTV Plex guide |
| Jellyfin as the source or client | Either | Tunarr documents Jellyfin source support. ErsatzTV’s Jellyfin client setup uses M3U and XMLTV guide data. Tunarr documentation ErsatzTV Jellyfin guide |
Neither Jellyfin nor Emby alone is the channel scheduler in this comparison. They can participate in a setup as a media source or client, but a tool such as Tunarr or ErsatzTV Legacy supplies the custom-channel scheduling layer.
How Tunarr and ErsatzTV Legacy differ
Tunarr: more documented scheduling choices
Tunarr supports Plex, Jellyfin, Emby, and local media sources. Its documented scheduling options include programs assigned to fixed times, slot-based sequential or random playback, Block Shuffle, and Cyclic Shuffle. That makes it a practical starting point whether you want a traditional timetable, controlled variety, or a rotation that repeats.

It is designed for beginners who want a simple, private way to store videos, photos and personal files, which is intuitive for users moving from cloud storage or external drives and move away from scattered date across devices. This entry-level NAS 2-bay perfect for personal entertainment, photo storage, and easy data backup (doesn't support Docker or virtual machines).
- Set Your Devices Free, Expand Your Digital World: This unified storage hub supports massive capacity up to 64TB.*Storage drives not included. Stop Deleting, Start Storing. You can store 22 million 3MB images, or 2 million 30MB songs, or 43K 1.5GB movies or 67 million 1MB documents! UGREEN NAS is a better way to free up storage across all your devices such as phones, computers, tablets and also does automatic backups across devices regardless of the operating system—Window, iOS, Android or macOS.
- The Smarter Long-term Way to Store: Unlike cloud storage with recurring monthly fees, a UGREEN NAS enclosure requires only a one-time purchase for long-term use. For example, you only need to pay $459.98 for a NAS, while for cloud storage, you need to pay $719.88 per year, $2,159.64 for 3 years, $3,599.40 for 5 years. You will save $6,738.82 over 10 years with UGREEN NAS! *NAS cost based on DH2300 + 12TB HDD; cloud cost based on 12TB plan (e.g. $59.99/month).
- Blazing Speed, Minimal Power: Equipped with a high-performance processor, 1GbE port, and 4GB RAM on Board, this NAS handles multiple tasks with ease. File transfers reach up to 125MB/s—a 1GB file takes only 8 seconds. Don't let slow clouds hold you back; they often need over 100 seconds for the same task. The difference is clear.
- Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
For playback, Tunarr can expose channels through a simulated HDHomeRun tuner to Plex, Jellyfin, or Emby, or provide an M3U playlist for a third-party IPTV player. The project describes itself as creating live TV channels from media on Plex/Jellyfin servers and more; that is the project’s description, not an independent assessment. Tunarr homepage and overview
ErsatzTV Legacy: broad local-library types, narrower synced libraries
ErsatzTV Legacy accepts local libraries and media from Plex, Jellyfin, or Emby. Its documented local-library types include movies, shows, music videos, other videos, songs, images, and remote streams. For libraries synchronized from Plex, Jellyfin, or Emby, the documentation lists only movies and shows.

What to check before installing
Source media and file access
Tunarr is available as a Docker image and standalone binaries. Its installation documentation lists Linux, Windows, and macOS builds for x64 and ARM. For Plex and Jellyfin sources, Tunarr recommends giving the service access to the underlying media paths; this can improve streaming performance and stability and reduce network activity. The documentation labels library synchronization an alpha-only feature, so check the status for the specific release you plan to use rather than assuming it is a mature part of the setup. Plex and Jellyfin integration requirements
- ErsatzTV with Plex: its client guide says Plex Pass is required and Plex clients directly support its MPEG-TS channel mode. ErsatzTV Plex guide
- ErsatzTV with Jellyfin: the documented setup adds an M3U tuner and an XMLTV guide-data provider. ErsatzTV Jellyfin guide
- Tunarr with a third-party player: its M3U output provides another route besides exposing channels as a simulated tuner. Check the player’s own compatibility before choosing it. Tunarr documentation
Project status and release channel
ErsatzTV Legacy’s maintainer, Jason Dove, said in a Reddit post that feature development would remain frozen and that he did not plan to accept pull requests. He also said security-related issues would be addressed while Legacy was integrated with the ErsatzTV Next transcoding engine. The same post describes Next as an effort intended to integrate with external scheduling tools; that does not establish it as a like-for-like replacement for Legacy’s scheduler. Jason Dove’s “Unarchiving ErsatzTV Legacy” post
Tunarr’s installation documentation calls the project pre-release and distinguishes stable version tags from development builds. If stability matters, choose the documented stable tag and review the release notes for that version. Its pre-release label is a reason to check the release you intend to run, not evidence by itself that a particular build is unreliable. Tunarr installation documentation

What this comparison can—and cannot—tell you
The documented features support choosing between the tools by scheduling style, media source, library type, client, and willingness to self-host. They do not establish which service is faster, more reliable, supports more channels in practice, or has happier users. No comparative performance or reliability benchmark is available in the project documentation cited here, so treat those as questions to evaluate in your own environment rather than settled differences.
Neither tool implies a requirement to buy a particular server, tuner, or storage device. The documented Tunarr operating-system and architecture options may help you assess a host you already have; hardware choice depends on your media and setup.
