You can run a custom Android interface on the first-generation 2017 Echo Spot, but not through an Amazon setting: the community-documented route unlocks the bootloader, replaces Fire OS with an unofficial Android 11-based LineageOS 18.1 build, and then runs a separately developed interface. It is an advanced modification that can wipe the device. The documented target is model VN94DQ / AEORK, codename rook; the 2024 Echo Spot is a different device and is not covered by this process.
Confirm that you have the 2017 Echo Spot
Check the model identifier before downloading files or connecting the device. TECHO5’s Spot project identifies its target as the first-generation Echo Spot, model VN94DQ / AEORK, codename rook. Amazon’s support information for Echo Spot (2024 Release) concerns a separate generation; do not apply the 2017 device’s unlock or firmware steps to it.
In this context, “jailbreak” means using a community bootloader-unlock method and installing custom firmware. It is not an official Amazon feature, and it does not simply change the clock face or display options in Alexa settings.
What the Android route installs—and what it does not
The Spot ships with Fire OS 5, based on Android 5.1.1. The community route replaces that software with an unofficial LineageOS 18.1 build based on Android 11. Only after the replacement system is installed can you prepare it for a separate custom app or interface.

A reported example is a bespoke circular interface running over LineageOS and interacting with software on a PC. That shows a custom project is possible; it does not establish a ready-made, plug-and-play Android tablet experience or a generally supported skin. The interface itself is a separate downstream project, not a built-in feature of the ROM.
Prepare the computer, cable, and backup
TECHO5’s getting-started guide calls for a Windows, Linux, or macOS computer, Python 3, Git, Android platform-tools (adb and fastboot), and a micro-USB data cable. A charge-only cable will not carry out the required data connection. The micro-USB port is beneath the Spot’s rear cover.

- Install the required tools using the instructions for your computer’s operating system. Linux users also need appropriate serial-port access.
- Use the guide’s instructions for its Windows
fastbrickroute or Linux route, as applicable. Do not substitute steps from another Echo model. - Back up before replacing firmware. The guide describes backing up partitions from TWRP and says to plan for the Spot’s data to be wiped.
An iFixit teardown independently documents the rear micro-USB port and reports that holding all three top buttons can enter FASTBOOT mode. That is useful hardware context, not a complete unlocking procedure or confirmation that custom firmware is safe for a particular device.
Check firmware compatibility before attempting the unlock
Do not update or downgrade Fire OS based on a guess. The unlock implementation lists supported Fire OS builds and refuses unsupported versions, but that compatibility list can change as the community tooling evolves. Check the live amonet-rook release and installation guide immediately before starting, and proceed only if the Spot’s installed build is explicitly supported there. Do not assume a version supported on a different Echo model—or an older guide—is valid for this device.

Follow the community route in its documented order
The installation guide separates the work into an unlock, ROM installation, and preparation of LineageOS for downstream software. Follow its current commands and prompts exactly; the outline below explains the sequence but is not a substitute for those device-specific instructions.
- Unlock with
amonet-rook. Use the guide’s current instructions for the matching Spot and computer platform. Verify firmware compatibility first. - Confirm TWRP boots. The guide’s next checkpoint is reaching TWRP, the recovery environment used for the subsequent installation and backup steps.
- Back up, then install the unofficial LineageOS 18.1 build. Treat device data as subject to erasure and confirm that the backup is usable before replacing firmware.
- Confirm LineageOS boots. Do not continue to a custom interface until the new system starts successfully.
- Complete the guide’s LineageOS preparation. It calls for enabling Wi-Fi and rooted debugging as instructed, then installing the chosen downstream app or software.
These are community-maintained steps, not Amazon-approved instructions. A mistake, unsupported firmware build, or interruption can leave the device unusable; no success rate or recovery guarantee is established by the cited documentation.

Choose Android customization or the Linux alternative
