A room-only or zone clean may not discover newly opened space. If the saved map still causes trouble, the right fix—editing, restoring, or deleting and rebuilding it—depends on the robot’s brand and model.
Before remapping: prepare the room and protect the existing map
- Identify the robot’s exact model and app. Mapping and reset menus differ, so there is no universal map-reset path.
- Open doors to every area you want included, and clear cords and other floor obstacles.
- Provide adequate lighting if your robot uses a camera or visual landmarks. iRobot says light helps its vSLAM navigation identify landmarks such as windows, picture frames, ceiling fans, and lights (iRobot Smart Maps guide).
- Back up an edited map if the app offers that option. ECOVACS recommends backing up an edited map, and some iRobot models can restore an earlier map from a Clean Map report (ECOVACS Mapping Guide; iRobot Smart Maps guide).
How to remap after rearranging furniture
- Choose a mapping run or full-home mission. In the robot’s app, look for a mapping, quick mapping, or whole-home option. If there is no mapping mode, use the manufacturer’s full-home clean procedure. Don’t select only the rearranged room if the robot needs to explore beyond its current map.
- Start from the dock when the model requires it. Keep the dock in its established position unless the model’s instructions say otherwise. Some robots use the dock as a navigation reference or need to return to it to save the map.
- Let the robot work uninterrupted. Don’t pick it up, guide it, move the dock, or interrupt the mission while it maps. Follow the model’s instructions about whether the robot must return to its dock for the map to be saved.
- Wait for the mission to finish successfully. Then review the map in the app and adjust room dividers or labels if those tools are available. Save or back up the result if supported.
- If the map remains wrong, use model-specific recovery. Check whether the app supports editing or restoring a previous map before deleting anything. If the model requires a fresh map, follow its exact deletion and remapping steps.
Why the right remapping method depends on the brand
iRobot Roomba
iRobot’s general Smart Maps guidance says directed room or zone cleaning will not actively search for new space. After furniture rearrangement or renovations, it recommends a mapping run or a “Clean Everywhere” mission. A mapping run navigates without cleaning; one complete run is enough to begin customizing a new Smart Map. In the app, the listed path is Map icon > “+ Create a new Smart Map” > start mapping run (iRobot Smart Maps guide).
For Roomba i3, i4, and i5 models, iRobot says the map does not update while cleaning. For a layout change or a moved charging dock, its guidance is to delete the saved map and start a new mapping run. These models support one Smart Map. Do not apply that rule to every Roomba: other Smart Map models may offer an earlier-map restore option through a Clean Map report. If restoring does not work, iRobot’s general guidance suggests deleting the map and remapping (iRobot i3/i4/i5 Smart Maps guide; iRobot Smart Maps guide).
For certain iRobot models, the base station is a navigation reference, so moving it to another floor is not recommended. Check the instructions for your specific model before changing dock placement.

Roborock
Roborock’s cited instructions use the S7 as an example and warn that steps can vary by model and firmware. For a first saved map, the procedure requires map-saving mode, starting from the dock, opening doors to rooms that should be mapped, and a successful return to the unmoved dock. On listed supported multi-floor models, users can enable multi-floor mapping and create an additional floor map without carrying the dock upstairs; that advice concerns mapping another floor, not a general rule for moving the dock after furniture changes (Roborock multi-floor mapping).
If a Roborock map appears at the wrong angle, its support guidance says to place the dock with at least 0.5 m of clearance on each side and 1.5 m in front. It also suggests switching Map Saving off and back on so the next cleanup creates a map (Roborock multi-floor mapping). These procedures do not establish that every Roborock needs its map deleted after furniture is moved; check the app and model-specific instructions first.

ECOVACS
In its Mapping Guide updated 2025-09-19, ECOVACS says to open all doors, remove floor obstacles, and ensure sufficient light before creating a map. Its Quick Mapping option is in the ECOVACS HOME app under Mapping. The robot may also map while working, but ECOVACS advises against moving it during mapping. Its guide warns not to relocate the dock after mapping because doing so can cause positioning errors or prevent automatic return (ECOVACS Mapping Guide).
Map capacity also varies by model. A separate ECOVACS FAQ says the devices it covers can save two permanent maps plus one new-environment map, and that maps must be saved manually; saving a new map may require replacing an existing one. Treat those limits as applying only to the covered devices, not the entire ECOVACS range (ECOVACS Mapping Guide).

If the new map is missing or still inaccurate
- The robot only cleaned familiar rooms: Run dedicated mapping mode or a full-home mission if the model supports it; a targeted room or zone run may not search for newly accessible space.
- The run stopped before completion: Retry with doors open and obstacles cleared, and let the robot finish without being moved or interrupted.
- The map is rotated or misplaced: Check the dock’s placement and clearances in the manufacturer’s instructions. Roborock’s published clearances apply to its cited map-angle troubleshooting, not as a universal dock rule.
- The robot keeps using an outdated map: Look for map editing or restore options first. If the model requires deletion—as iRobot specifies for its i3/i4/i5 models—delete the old map and run a new mapping mission.
- The app cannot save another map: Check the model’s map limits and whether an existing map must be replaced. Do not assume all robots support the same number of maps.
