Often, yes—but only if your robot supports multi-floor maps and has already saved a map of the floor you want to clean. Some models recognize a saved floor when you carry the vacuum there; others have just one map or require a particular cleaning mode. Check the instructions for your exact model before moving the dock or deleting a map.

What determines whether you can skip remapping?

Two things matter: whether the robot supports maps for separate floors, and whether the destination floor has already been mapped and saved. A robot that has only one map may still vacuum upstairs in a general whole-area mode, but that does not necessarily give it mapped navigation or room-by-room cleaning there.

Map capacity alone is not proof of multi-floor support. Roborock’s FAQ says the S6, S4 and S5 Max could save three maps, but maps for different floors require the multi-floor feature to be supported and enabled. Check your exact model’s manual or app rather than inferring support from the number of maps it can store.

How to use a saved floor map

Roborock models with multi-floor support

Roborock’s support guide uses the S7 as its example. It says the initial map is made in saved-map mode by starting the robot at its dock, mapping the intended rooms and returning to that dock. To map another floor, enable multi-floor mode, choose “create new map,” then carry the robot alone to the other level. Roborock says it returns to its starting point and stores the map.

After the maps are created, Roborock says to carry the vacuum alone to the target floor and start it. The robot should recognize the floor and use its corresponding map; the dock does not need to go upstairs. Roborock lists the S4, S4 Max, S5 Max, S6, S6 Pure, S6 MaxV, S7, S7 MaxV, S8, S8+, S8 Pro Ultra, Q Revo, Q8 Max and Q5 Pro as supporting multi-floor maps. The guide notes that steps can vary slightly by model and firmware, so confirm the workflow for your particular device.

iRobot Roomba models

iRobot’s instructions depend on the model. Its Imprint Smart Maps guide says compatible robots can be brought to another separate space for a new mapping run. It also says the i3–i5 family supports only one Smart Map, so do not assume every Roomba can save a map for each floor.

A separate iRobot guide says i3, i4 and i5 models can clean another floor without making a new map by starting a “Clean Everywhere” job. That is different from selecting mapped rooms: directed room cleaning must start at the charging station, and picking up the robot during a job interrupts that mode’s localization. The guide notes regional firmware requirements; check the support page for your region and current software.

Should you move the charging dock?

Do not relocate the dock unless your model’s instructions call for it. Roborock’s described workflow for the listed multi-floor models does not require moving the dock when mapping or cleaning additional floors. iRobot advises against moving its charging station to another floor because the robot uses the base as a point of reference when beginning a mission.

Quick checks before carrying the vacuum upstairs

  • Confirm multi-floor support. Verify it for the exact model and firmware in the manufacturer’s app or support documentation.
  • Save the destination map first. Carrying a robot to an unmapped floor does not automatically mean it can use a saved map there.
  • Check how the map is selected. The reviewed Roborock guide describes automatic floor recognition for its listed models. Other models may use a different selection or mapping process.
  • Choose the right cleaning mode. If there is no second map, see whether the robot offers a whole-area mode, and whether room selection requires a saved map or a dock start.
  • Leave the dock where instructed. Do not move it between floors unless the model’s guidance specifically requires that.
  • Check before deleting or remapping. Map behavior and setup can differ by model, region and firmware; consult the current official instructions before removing a saved map.

Manufacturer guidance supports these workflows for the named Roborock and iRobot models, not every robot vacuum. Their support pages do not display publication dates, so map-count figures should be treated as model-specific statements rather than universal current limits.
