Update only the settings that no longer match the room. If the robot needs to discover newly accessible floor, run a mapping pass or a clean-everywhere job; a targeted room or zone clean may not explore it. Whether you need to remap depends on the make, model, app, and firmware.
Which map settings should you check first?
Open the saved map and compare it with the room’s new layout. Start with boundaries and targets that can directly affect where the robot travels:
- No-go zones and virtual walls: Move, resize, or remove an exclusion that now blocks open floor. Add or adjust one if the furniture move exposed an obstacle you want the robot to avoid.
- Clean zones: Update a saved target if it no longer covers the intended area or now overlaps a different space.
- Room dividers: Check boundaries if the new layout makes the map’s room divisions inaccurate or causes a room clean to include the wrong area.
- Furniture or flooring markers: If your app allows you to place these on the map, update markers that matter to the cleaning behavior. Such editing tools are device- and app-specific.
Make only the edits your app supports and that the current layout calls for; map controls and their effects are not the same across brands.
Do you need to remap after moving furniture?
Not necessarily. A furniture move by itself does not always require deleting the saved map. First correct stale zones or dividers. A mapping run or clean-everywhere mission is useful when the robot needs to explore floor space that was previously inaccessible. If the map is badly distorted, the robot cannot localize, or the manufacturer says the model does not update maps during cleaning, follow that model’s recovery instructions instead.

When a full exploration run helps
iRobot says that after rearranging furniture or renovating, owners should run a mapping run or a “clean everywhere” mission. Its guidance explains that when the robot is directed to clean specific areas, it will not actively search for new space. So a room or zone job should not be assumed to discover newly opened floor.
When model-specific remapping may be required
iRobot’s support guidance for i3, i4, and i5 says their maps do not update during cleaning; to modify those maps, delete the map and start a new mapping run. Other Imprint models may support editing room dividers, labels, and zones, subject to device and app compatibility. Check the instructions for your exact model before deleting a map.

How to update the map and verify the result
- Identify the robot and app: Find the exact make and model, and note the app version. Menu names and map features vary.
- Compare the saved map with the room: Open the floor map and locate stale boundaries, clean targets, room dividers, and any editable furniture or flooring markers.
- Edit affected settings: Move, resize, or remove outdated no-go zones or virtual walls; adjust clean zones and room dividers if available; change relevant markers only if your app supports them.
- Explore newly accessible space if needed: Start a mapping run or clean-everywhere mission, following the model’s instructions. Clear the floor and make sure the robot can reach the newly open area.
- Inspect the saved map and route: Confirm the changed area appears as expected and watch whether the robot follows the intended route. If the map remains distorted or the robot cannot find its position, consult the manufacturer’s recovery steps; these may include restoring an earlier map or creating a new one.

Zone-editing details worth knowing
For iRobot maps, a Keep Out Zone should cover the area to exclude, not merely its entrance. iRobot recommends a small buffer because the robot’s position may be off by a few centimetres. It also cautions that too many zones or a blocked route can limit access. Treat those as iRobot-specific instructions rather than universal measurements or behavior.
For Roborock, the S6-series manual ties virtual no-go zones to saved-map mode. Its warning about manually moving the robot and significant home-environment changes is another reason to inspect the map after a move rather than assume all saved barriers remain intact.
