The clearest common non-SSD use for an M.2 slot is a compatible Wi-Fi module, sometimes with Bluetooth—but only when the computer’s specific socket is designed for wireless connectivity. M.2 is a connector and form-factor family, not a universal expansion port: the slot’s key, wiring, dimensions, firmware support, and board design determine what it can accept.

What can an M.2 slot do besides hold an SSD?

Connect a Wi-Fi module

A dedicated M.2 Wi-Fi socket can accept a compatible wireless module. ASUS manuals document sockets intended for Wi-Fi modules, including an E-key socket for a 2230 module on the Pro WS WRX90E-SAGE SE. Another ASUS manual identifies a Key E slot for a Wi-Fi module on the Pro H610T-CSM.

Some wireless modules also provide Bluetooth, but verify that the particular module and host support it. A motherboard or laptop may also need antenna leads, suitable firmware, and operating-system drivers. A socket that merely looks like it could fit a Wi-Fi card is not enough.

Install storage—if that particular socket supports it

M.2 slots are also used for storage, but support can vary even between sockets on one board. The ROG STRIX B365-G GAMING manual lists one Key M socket supporting PCIe 3.0 x4 and SATA, and another supporting PCIe 3.0 x4 only; it also identifies a separate M.2 Wi-Fi slot. This is why socket role and interface matter more than the general label “M.2.”

Other add-ons: possible only when specifically supported

Cellular modems and other expansion devices should not be treated as plug-and-play M.2 upgrades. Their operation can depend on the required PCIe or USB signals, socket key, antenna or SIM provisions, firmware restrictions, drivers, and host support. Unless the computer or board documentation confirms the exact device type, compatibility is unestablished.

Why one M.2 slot may not work with another device

  • Key and purpose: The socket’s keying helps identify compatible modules, but the key alone does not establish that the board provides the signals or function a device needs.
  • Electrical interface: A socket may support PCIe, SATA, USB, or a specific combination. A module must match the interface actually wired to that socket.
  • Module size: Check the supported length and width, such as 2230, against the device and its mounting point.
  • Board and processor design: Lane allocation, shared ports, and processor-dependent limitations can change which interfaces are available. ASUS lists processor-family-dependent M.2 PCIe capabilities for the TUF GAMING B850M-E WIFI.
  • Supporting hardware and software: Wireless modules may require antenna connections, firmware support, and drivers; other devices can have their own host-specific requirements.

How to check compatibility before buying

  1. Identify the exact computer or motherboard model. Use its manufacturer specifications or manual, not a generic guide to M.2.
  2. Find the exact socket and its stated role. Confirm whether it is a Wi-Fi socket, storage socket, or another explicitly documented connection.
  3. Match the key, module dimensions, and interface. Check that the socket supports the module’s key and size, and the required PCIe, SATA, USB, or other signaling.
  4. Check board-specific notes. Look for processor restrictions, shared lanes or ports, antenna connections, firmware limitations, and boot or operating-system support.
  5. Compare the module’s requirements with every listed condition. Buy a wireless module only when the manual confirms a suitable M.2 Wi-Fi socket and the remaining hardware and software requirements are met.
