Use a custom GPT only for a task that fits its stated purpose, limit what you share, and check its apps, links, and requested actions before proceeding. A GPT can combine behavior instructions, reference files, built-in capabilities, and external services; the last of these may receive relevant parts of your input. OpenAI warns that malicious instructions can arrive through external content, and says its safeguards do not eliminate prompt-injection or third-party risk.
What a custom GPT can do—and where risk enters
A custom GPT is a configured version of ChatGPT. Its builder can set instructions that shape how it behaves, provide uploaded knowledge files for reference, and enable capabilities or connections to apps and external APIs. Those components create different trust boundaries: a knowledge file is reference material, while an app or API can pass information beyond ChatGPT.
OpenAI says GPT builders cannot view individual conversations users have with their GPTs. That does not mean all information stays within ChatGPT: relevant portions of your input may be sent to a connected external service. OpenAI says it does not audit or control how those providers use or store the data. Its guidance is to use GPTs with apps or APIs only when you trust them: GPTs in ChatGPT.
How to use a GPT more safely
- Check the fit. Read the GPT’s description and conversation starters. Use it only if the stated purpose matches your task. These details help explain what the GPT is for; they do not independently verify its implementation or trustworthiness.
- Check for external connections. Look for apps or APIs and consider what information the task could send to them. Do not provide passwords, access tokens, confidential work material, or sensitive personal information unless you have verified that sharing it with the relevant provider is appropriate and authorized.
- Review links before opening them. Check the destination domain and consider what information the link might transmit. OpenAI warns that a generated link can be malicious and that visiting a link may transmit information, such as a location included in its URL: ChatGPT generated links.
- Inspect actions before approving them. If ChatGPT asks to run an action, check the operation, connected service, and information involved. Do not approve an action you do not understand or did not intend. A confirmation prompt is not proof that the connector is trustworthy or that its permissions are appropriate.
- Treat suspicious instructions as untrusted. Do not automatically follow content that tells you to reveal secrets, bypass safeguards, or take an unrelated action. Malicious instructions can be embedded in external content, but wording alone cannot reliably identify every attack.
How prompt injection and connected actions can affect you
Prompt injection occurs when untrusted content attempts to steer a model’s behavior—for example, by telling it to disclose information or perform an action. The instructions might appear in material the GPT is asked to process, a link, or content supplied by an external integration. OpenAI specifically warns about malicious instructions in links and increased prompt-injection exposure from unsafe or untrusted MCP servers. This is a reason to inspect content and integrations, not evidence that every GPT or link is malicious.

Some connected apps can take write or modify actions. ChatGPT may ask for confirmation before certain actions and may block especially risky ones, but these controls are not a trust certification. OpenAI says users and workspace owners remain responsible for vetting custom or third-party connectors. Its security guidance describes safeguards while also stating that they do not eliminate prompt-injection or third-party risk: Admin controls, security, and compliance for plugins and apps and Developer mode and MCP apps in ChatGPT.
What ChatGPT privacy settings do—and do not—change
Privacy controls affect ChatGPT’s handling of conversations; they do not determine what a connected external provider receives. Non-synced connected apps are subject to the provider’s own storage, processing, privacy, and data-residency terms.

- Turn off model improvement: new conversations are not used to improve models, but saved chats remain in history. Delete chats separately if you want them removed from your history.
- Use Temporary Chat: temporary chats do not appear in history and are not used to improve models. OpenAI says they may still be retained for up to 30 days for safety purposes.
- Consider your plan or workspace: on consumer plans, model-use treatment depends on your account setting and plan; Business, Enterprise, and Edu workspace content is not used to train models by default.

Keep instructions separate from reference material
Put behavior rules and workflow guidance in the GPT’s instruction field; use knowledge files as reference material. OpenAI recommends clear, text-forward files and testing how they are used in Preview. Keep multi-step directions explicit, and remove conflicting or overly broad instructions. Limit capabilities and review connectors
Enable only the capabilities and integrations the task requires. Review connector source permissions, available actions, access settings, and provider terms. In a managed workspace, follow administrator settings and current notices about access, publishing, and connected apps.
Test changes deliberately
Use Preview to test representative prompts and workflows. Make changes in small increments so you can spot conflicts or unintended behavior, then test again before making the GPT available to others.

Current access and availability notes
As of OpenAI’s Help Center pages checked October 4, 2026, GPTs are available to signed-in users with access, but new GPT creation and publishing are unavailable on personal Free, Go, Plus, and Pro accounts. Creation and publishing in Business, Enterprise, and Edu depend on workspace settings and permissions.
OpenAI’s current pages also describe a plan to retire custom GPTs for affected Enterprise workspaces on December 11, 2026, with existing GPTs remaining usable until then; they describe a migration to Plugins and say other plans are expected to follow the same timeline. This is a future product plan, not a completed change, and may change. Check your account or workspace notices for the applicable schedule: Troubleshooting GPTs.
