For longer battery lifespan, keep your model’s optimized charging feature enabled. There is no universal case setting that increases a case’s capacity, and exact options vary by earbud model.
First, decide which kind of battery life you mean
- More listening time before recharging: Reduce power-intensive audio features and make sure unused earbuds are actually charging in the case.
- More total listening time from buds plus case: Start with a fully charged case and earbuds; the case can recharge the buds, but its capacity is fixed.
- Battery that holds up over months and years: Use supported optimized-charging features and follow the manufacturer’s charging and care guidance.
These goals are related but not interchangeable. An optimized charging feature may delay a full charge to reduce long-term wear; it is not intended to add playback hours to the current session.
Settings and habits that can extend a listening session
Turn off audio features you do not need
Active noise cancellation (ANC), transparency or ambient modes, adaptive audio, and some sound-processing features can reduce runtime on supported models. Google recommends disabling ANC, Adaptive Audio, or Transparency on Pixel Buds when you want to extend charge. For Sony WF-1000XM3 specifically, Sony says DSEE HX Auto and Equalizer reduce available battery life, and its runtime estimates are lower with DSEE HX Auto on. These are model-specific examples, not universal menu instructions for every brand.
The trade-off is straightforward: turning features off may increase runtime, but you give up their listening benefits. Compare estimates only for the same model and conditions; manufacturer “up to” figures are not controlled cross-brand tests.

Put unused earbuds in the case and close it
When you take the earbuds out, return them to a charged case and close its lid. Samsung recommends this for unused Galaxy Buds, and Apple likewise advises placing AirPods in their case when they are not in use. If the buds are left out, they may remain active or fail to recharge for the next session.
Start with both the earbuds and case charged
For a full day’s use, charge the case and earbuds before you leave. A case-inclusive listening estimate assumes a charged case can replenish the earbuds; it does not mean each earbud alone can play for that entire advertised duration.

Keep optimized charging on for long-term battery care
On supported AirPods, Optimized Battery Charging reduces the time the earbuds spend fully charged and delays charging to full until shortly before expected use. Apple says it is on by default under its stated device and software requirements. AirPods Pro 3 also learns from use and adapts an Optimized Charge Limit. These are battery-longevity features, not ways to increase same-day playback time.
Apple’s route to the controls is to open Settings on the connected device, tap the AirPods name, then tap Battery. Apple’s support page describes how to turn the features off, but ordinarily leave them enabled; switch them off only if you need a full charge immediately and the setting is preventing one. Labels and availability can depend on the AirPods model and connected device software.

What published runtime figures do—and do not—tell you
Manufacturers publish estimates for particular products and configurations. The figures below illustrate why settings matter, but they are not a head-to-head comparison:

Use the estimate for your exact model and feature combination, rather than assuming another model will behave similarly. Firmware, phone compatibility, listening features, and usage conditions can affect the result.

Charge the case the way your exact model supports
An earbud case is itself a battery, and charging options differ among models. Some Pixel Buds and Galaxy Buds cases support wireless charging, but not every case does. Check the support information for your exact earbud and case before using a Qi pad. Wireless charging changes how you replenish the case; it does not increase case capacity or listening time per charge.

If the earbuds or case are not charging reliably
- Check the case and contacts: Use the case designed for your earbuds. Dry moisture from the charging contacts before charging, and check that the buds are seated correctly and contacts are clean if an indicator reports an error.
- Take unusual heat seriously: Samsung says some warmth during charging can be normal, but charging may stop if temperature becomes abnormal. Its Buds2 Pro guidance says to remove unusually hot buds from a wireless pad and let them cool.
- Inspect the charger: Follow the model’s guidance and do not use a damaged cable or adapter.
- Escalate persistent problems: If the case or earbuds still fail to charge, or the battery has substantially degraded, consult support for that exact model. A setting cannot repair a failing battery.
