IBM Bob Self-Hosted runs on a customer-managed Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform (OCP) cluster. Administrators install its backend with IBM’s release bundle and bobctl; developers connect Bob IDE or Bob Shell to the deployed API gateway, then clone a repository into a client workspace or open an existing local checkout. This is a customer-managed deployment, not evidence of a server-side GitHub, GitLab, or Bitbucket connector.

What you need before deploying Bob

IBM announced Bob Self-Hosted on October 1, 2026; IBM’s release blog says it became generally available on September 24, 2026. The deployment prerequisites and supported versions are release-sensitive, so use the documentation and release bundle for the entitlement you plan to install. The prerequisites listed by IBM include:

  • A valid Bob Self-Hosted entitlement.
  • Access to IBM’s Bob GitHub repository to obtain the release bundle, and access to the IBM Entitled Container Registry for the backend images. The release bundle contains manifests, Helm charts, templates, and bobctl; it does not include the backend images.
  • An administrative workstation connected to the target OpenShift cluster, with oc compatible with that cluster. IBM’s prerequisites page lists OCP 4.20 as the minimum; confirm the supported OCP version for your specific release.
  • Helm 3.14 or later, Bash 3.2 or later, and OpenSSL 3.5 or the operating system-provided version, as listed in the prerequisites for the documented release.
  • Access to the intended image registry and any model-inference services required by the chosen deployment method.

Check architecture, storage, and backup plans

IBM requires Bob workloads to run on amd64 (x86_64) worker nodes. A mixed-architecture cluster can be used only if workloads are constrained to amd64 nodes; IBM says those constraints are not applied automatically. Confirm node placement before installation rather than assuming the cluster scheduler will select suitable workers.

IBM lists Managed NFS and OpenShift Data Foundation among supported storage options and recommends fast block storage for PostgreSQL and OpenSearch data. A separate backup storage target is also required. Capacity varies with the release and enabled add-ons, so use IBM’s sizing tables for the intended configuration instead of relying on a universal CPU, memory, or disk figure.

Choose a connected or air-gapped installation route

The key decision is whether the cluster and administration workstation can reach IBM’s source registry and the private registry where your cluster will pull images. IBM documents three routes:

Route When it fits Image handling Inference and operational considerations
Connected The cluster can reach IBM Container Registry. Images can be pulled during installation. Use the current IBM installation guide for the release’s model-inference choices, certificate setup, update process, and telemetry behavior.
Air-gapped, direct mirroring The administration workstation can access both IBM’s source registry and the private destination registry. Mirror images directly from the source registry into the private registry. IBM documents on-premises inference services for air-gapped modes. Confirm the release-specific update and certificate procedures.
Air-gapped, indirect mirroring The online and offline environments are separated. Download images in the online environment, transfer them across the boundary, and upload them to the private registry. IBM documents on-premises inference services for air-gapped modes. Plan and validate the image-transfer and update process for the entitled release.

“Air-gapped” here describes the disconnected installation route; it should not be taken to mean that every connected service or capability is available without network access. IBM’s installation guide distinguishes the inference choices, update path, certificate source, and telemetry behavior by method. Check those details in the live guide for your release, and verify private registry references and image availability before starting an offline installation.

Prepare configuration and install the backend

Use the release bundle supplied for your entitlement and follow its command syntax and flags. The broad sequence below reflects IBM’s documented installation flow; it is not a substitute for release-specific values in the bundle.

  1. Extract the release bundle and prepare configuration. Create config.yaml from config-template.yaml in the extracted release directory. Set values for your cluster and environment.
  2. Configure model and identity services where needed. Prepare the model gateway configuration with the required inference and guardrail endpoints. Prepare IDP configuration if LDAP federation is needed. Decide whether to use a customer-managed trusted TLS certificate or distribute trust for the default self-signed CA.
  3. Log in to the intended OpenShift cluster. Confirm that your administrative workstation is connected to the correct cluster and project before applying resources.
  4. Generate and review cluster-scoped resources. Run ./bobctl generate-cluster-resources, then inspect work/cluster-resources.yaml. IBM calls for administrator review of these cluster-wide permissions and resources before applying them.
  5. Apply the reviewed resources and install. Follow the current release bundle’s instructions to apply the cluster resources, then run ./bobctl install --registry-creds <username:password> --accept-license with the registry credentials required for your route. If applying model gateway configuration during installation, include --model-config <file> using the syntax documented for that release.
  6. Wait for readiness and verify the endpoint. Wait until the Bob custom resource reports Ready. If model configuration was not supplied during installation, IBM documents bobctl update-model-config as the way to update it afterward; follow the current bundle for its required arguments and procedure.

Do not apply generated cluster-wide resources without reviewing them, and do not assume commands, defaults, or flags remain identical across releases.

Connect Bob IDE or Bob Shell to the deployment

Client access has three parts: the API endpoint, trust for its TLS certificate, and authentication. The administrator should provide the API route—typically https://api.<cluster-domain>—and the CA certificate if the route uses an internal or self-signed certificate. Import that CA into the workstation’s trust store as appropriate for its operating system; otherwise the client may reject the connection even when the route is reachable.

Configure Bob IDE

Set gatewayUrl in the Bob IDE settings file to the API endpoint provided by the administrator. Ensure the workstation trusts the endpoint certificate, then sign in with the organization credentials assigned to the user.

Configure Bob Shell

Set the BOB_GATEWAY_URL environment variable to the API endpoint. When using SSO, set BOB_WEB_LOGIN_URL if the login URL cannot be derived automatically. Make sure the shell’s environment can access the required CA trust, then authenticate with the organization’s assigned credentials.

Clone a repository or open an existing checkout

The documented repository workflow is performed in the Bob client workspace. In Bob IDE, use the file explorer’s Clone Repository action, enter the Git repository URL, choose a local directory, and open the cloned folder. IBM’s Quickstart demonstrates this with https://github.com/IBM/bob-demo.git and states that Git must be installed.

For a repository already cloned on the developer’s machine, open the project folder in the IDE. For private repositories, the developer workstation must be able to reach the Git host and the user needs ordinary Git authorization to clone, fetch, or push. Repository hosting and Git transport are separate from Bob’s backend: the documented workflow does not establish that the backend receives or stores the user’s Git credentials.

What the documented Git workflow does—and does not—confirm

  • Repository hosting: A repository may be hosted on GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, Azure Repos, or another Git service, subject to the user’s access and the workstation’s network connectivity.
  • Client-side Git operations: The documented Bob IDE workflow clones into a local workspace, and an existing local project folder can be opened. Git must be installed for the demonstrated clone workflow.
  • Server-side SCM integration: The reviewed IBM deployment and quickstart materials do not establish a distinct self-hosted Bob connector, such as a GitHub App, or automatic repository synchronization. Do not treat the client-side clone workflow as proof of such an integration.

Production checks before onboarding a team

  • Verify the current OCP, client, architecture, storage, and sizing compatibility for the exact Bob release and add-ons.
  • Constrain Bob workloads to amd64 workers if the cluster has mixed CPU architectures.
  • Confirm the chosen storage meets the deployment’s needs, including fast block storage for PostgreSQL and OpenSearch data, and configure separate backup storage.
  • Test registry access or the complete image-mirroring and transfer process before installation, including image references in the private registry.
  • Validate model gateway endpoints, guardrail endpoints, and any LDAP federation configuration before onboarding users.
  • Distribute the correct API endpoint and certificate authority trust instructions to client users.
  • Confirm that developer workstations can reach the relevant Git host and that users can authenticate to their private repositories.

IBM’s October 1, 2026 announcement frames self-hosting as an option for organizations that need control over where AI operates, especially around sensitive code and regulated data. That is a deployment-control rationale, not a published benchmark of Bob’s effectiveness or proof that every Bob-related service runs offline. Infrastructure ownership, upgrades, availability, network controls, identity, and storage remain the customer’s responsibility in this OpenShift model.
