You can turn a photo already on your phone into a wallpaper using its built-in settings—no separate app is needed for a single image. Choose a photo with room to crop, position the important subject in the wallpaper preview, then set it for the Lock Screen, Home Screen, or both.
Choose and prepare a photo
Look for a clear subject and enough image around it to allow a tall, portrait crop. Keep the original if you plan to make a crop in an editor that might replace or alter the source.
- Keep the subject clear. Leave important faces or objects away from areas where the clock, widgets, or app icons will sit.
- For a horizontal photo, decide whether cropping off the sides still preserves the subject. If not, use an editor to build out or design the background rather than stretching the photo.
- Check the preview on your phone. There is no single pixel size established here for every phone; screen proportions and the crop can differ by device. Canva also recommends considering an image’s size, colors, and layout behind apps and icons (Canva phone wallpaper maker).
Set a photo as wallpaper on iPhone
- Open Settings > Wallpaper > Add New Wallpaper.
- Tap Photos and choose the image you want.
- Adjust the image in the preview so the subject is visible and the framing looks right.
- Tap Add, then choose Set as Wallpaper Pair to use it for both screens, or tap Customize Home Screen to adjust the Home Screen separately.
Apple also lets you open the wallpaper gallery by touching and holding the Lock Screen. For a changing collection rather than one fixed image, iPhone’s Photo Shuffle is another built-in option. See Apple’s Change your iPhone wallpaper instructions.
Set a photo as wallpaper on a Google Pixel
- Touch and hold an empty area of the Home screen.
- Tap Wallpaper & style > Change wallpaper.
- Select Lock screen or Home screen.
- Tap Choose a photo, select your image, and check its placement in the preview.
- Apply the wallpaper when the framing looks right.
These steps are for Pixel phones; other Android manufacturers can use different menu names and crop behavior. Google’s Pixel wallpaper instructions cover the Pixel flow.

When to use a design app instead
For one photo with no added elements, the phone’s wallpaper settings are usually enough. An editor is useful when the composition needs more control than the phone preview offers, or when you want to combine pictures, add text, or use a template.

Canva’s wallpaper maker supports uploading photos and editing templates, and Canva lists iOS and Android apps. Its tools are optional; you do not need to install an editor just to set a photo as wallpaper.

Optional: make an iPhone photo a Spatial Scene
On iPhone 12 or later running iOS 26, Apple offers a Spatial Scene effect for some photos. The effect appears only on the Lock Screen, and not every image qualifies. Apple says suitable photos typically have high-quality lighting, clear separation between subject and background, or a landscape orientation.
