If Microsoft Phone Link will not connect, first identify whether you are pairing an Android phone or an iPhone: Android relies mainly on Wi-Fi and Microsoft account linking, while iPhone pairing uses Bluetooth. Check the requirements for your phone, then follow the matching steps below.

Check that your PC and phone meet the requirements

Phone Link uses different connection methods on Android and iPhone. Confirm your devices meet Microsoft’s current requirements before changing settings.

Android

  • The PC must run Windows 10 with the October 2022 update or later, or Windows 11.
  • The phone must run Android 10 or later.
  • For the usual setup, the PC and phone should be on the same Wi-Fi network. Microsoft says mobile-data syncing is also possible when enabled in Link to Windows.
  • Microsoft describes Link to Windows integration on select Android device families, including Samsung, HONOR, OPPO, ASUS, and vivo.
  • Use a personal Microsoft account. Phone Link does not support multiple Android profiles or work/school accounts.

See Microsoft’s Phone Link requirements and setup and Android connection troubleshooting guidance.

iPhone

  • The PC must run Windows 10 with the May 2019 Update or later, or Windows 11, and have Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE).
  • The iPhone must run iOS 16 or later.
  • Keep the devices nearby and turn on Bluetooth on both.
  • Microsoft says the Link to Windows app on iPhone is optional. Pairing and feature access require granting relevant iPhone permissions.
  • Phone Link does not support work/school accounts.

For the current requirements, see Microsoft’s Phone Link requirements and setup.

Fix an Android connection or syncing problem

1. Check Wi-Fi, internet access, and account

  1. Make sure both devices are powered on and connected to the internet. On the PC, try opening a website to confirm it is online.
  2. Connect the PC and phone to the same Wi-Fi network. Microsoft says a shared trusted Wi-Fi network provides the fastest, most reliable connection. If you use mobile data instead, confirm syncing over mobile data is enabled in Link to Windows.
  3. Check that Phone Link on Windows and Link to Windows on Android are signed in to the same Microsoft account.

2. Update and reopen both apps

  1. Check for updates to Phone Link on the PC and Link to Windows on the phone.
  2. Close and reopen both apps after updating. Microsoft notes that an update may take a few minutes to register.

3. Check power and background restrictions

  • Turn off Battery Saver on both devices while troubleshooting.
  • On Android, exclude Link to Windows from battery optimization so the phone does not stop it in the background. The setting name and location vary by manufacturer and Android version.
  • Check that Phone Link is allowed to run in the background on Windows.

Microsoft’s Link to Windows Android app troubleshooting page covers app and battery troubleshooting.

4. Check network restrictions and router isolation

  • A VPN, firewall, public Wi-Fi, or workplace network policy may block communication between the phone and PC. If you are on a managed work network, ask its administrator whether Phone Link traffic is restricted.
  • If both devices are on the same Wi-Fi but still cannot communicate, check the router for Wireless Isolation or AP Isolation. When enabled, this setting can prevent devices on that network from communicating with one another.

Check the router setting rather than assuming you need a new router or Wi-Fi adapter.

  4. If it still will not reconnect, restart Phone Link and try again.

Fix iPhone pairing or syncing problems

1. Confirm Bluetooth and device requirements

Check that the PC has Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), the PC and iPhone meet the Windows and iOS version requirements above, and Bluetooth is enabled on both devices. Keep them close together during pairing.

2. Clear the old Bluetooth pairing

  1. In Windows Bluetooth settings, remove the iPhone from the list of paired devices.
  2. On the iPhone, open Bluetooth settings and forget the PC.
  3. Turn Bluetooth off on both devices, wait 10 seconds, then turn it back on.
  4. Start pairing again from Phone Link. If you removed the iPhone from Windows, make sure you have also forgotten the PC on the iPhone before retrying.

If the QR-code pairing flow fails, make sure the devices can discover each other over Bluetooth before starting it again.

Resolve an Android QR-code or setup-code problem

  1. When Android setup asks to scan a QR code, allow Link to Windows to use the phone’s camera.
  2. If code matching fails more than three times, Microsoft says linking is automatically prevented. Close and reopen Phone Link on the PC, then restart the setup flow rather than continuing to retry the same code.
