Electric-car range, charging time, running costs and battery longevity depend on the vehicle and how and where it is used. In U.S. Department of Energy guidance, typical all-electric range spans 110 to over 300 miles per charge, while charging rates vary widely by charger type. To estimate what ownership could mean for you, use a specific model’s rated range, your local electricity prices, your charging options and the vehicle’s actual battery-warranty terms.
How far can an electric car go on a charge?
The U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center (AFDC) gives a broad typical range of 110 to over 300 miles per charge for all-electric vehicles. That is a general overview, not the rating for a particular car or a guarantee of how far you will travel.
Actual range varies with the vehicle’s battery size, driving conditions and habits, and use of climate control. For a purchase or trip decision, check the official specifications for the exact model year and configuration, then allow for your expected conditions. A model’s rating and an individual driver’s result are not interchangeable.
How long does it take to charge an EV?
Charging time depends on the charging unit’s power, what the vehicle can accept, the battery’s state of charge and other conditions. The AFDC’s typical figures describe approximate miles of range added—not how long it takes to charge every battery from empty to full.

| Charging type | Typical range added | What it is useful for |
|---|---|---|
| Level 1 | 2–5 miles per hour | Slow charging where a suitable outlet and long parking time are available. |
| Level 2 | 10–30 miles per hour | Home or workplace charging when the site and electrical service support installation. |
| DC fast charging | 100–200+ miles in 30 minutes | Public charging, including on trips, when the car and charger are compatible. |
These are AFDC typical figures, not guaranteed rates. A vehicle may charge more slowly than the unit’s maximum rating allows, and charging speed can vary with battery state and conditions.
Can you charge an electric car at home?
Home charging is convenient if you have a suitable place to park and the electrical service to support the setup. A Level 2 home charger can add range faster than Level 1, but the equipment’s purchase price is only part of the decision: electrical work, site improvements, labor and permitting can affect the total.
The AFDC lists an indicative $800–$33,000 for Level 2 equipment, installation and site costs, excluding operating costs. That wide range reflects different equipment power and installation conditions; it is not a quote for your property. Before choosing a charger, check connector compatibility, the car’s charging limit, available amperage and whether your electrical service and installation site are suitable.

What if you cannot charge at home?
Workplace or public charging may be an alternative, and public DC fast chargers can be useful for travel. Check that the vehicle supports the charger’s connector and charging type, and confirm access and pricing with the charging provider. The available sources do not establish public-charging prices or access in any particular location.

Account for charging losses and any public-charging prices that apply. For a fair comparison with a gasoline car, use local fuel prices, the other car’s actual fuel economy, annual mileage and purchase or financing costs as well as energy expenses.
For historical context, a U.S. DOE report published August 31, 2020 estimated average U.S. EV charging cost at 15 cents per kWh, with a range of 8–27 cents. Its estimate used a weighted charging mix of 81% home, 14% workplace or public, and 5% DC fast charging. Those are assumptions and prices from that analysis, not a current local rate or a promise of savings.

DOE’s June 14, 2021 summary of a comprehensive vehicle ownership-cost study estimated scheduled maintenance at 6.1 cents per mile for a light-duty battery-electric vehicle and 10.1 cents per mile for a conventional internal-combustion vehicle. DOE attributes lower scheduled service needs in part to the absence of items such as engine oil, timing belts, oxygen sensors and spark plugs.

EV batteries are designed for extended use, but they eventually wear out. The AFDC notes that comprehensive battery-failure data are not available, so the evidence does not establish one universal battery lifespan.
Many manufacturers offer battery warranties of 8 years or 100,000 miles, according to the AFDC. Treat that as a common warranty pattern, not a promise that every battery lasts exactly that long or that every battery problem is covered. Check the warranty for the specific vehicle and market, including its terms and exclusions, and consult the owner’s manual or manufacturer for care guidance.

No. DOE estimated light-duty EV battery-pack production cost at $139 per kWh of usable energy in 2023, in 2023 constant dollars, for production at a scale of at least 100,000 units per year; its comparable estimate for 2008 was $1,415 per kWh. These are industrial production-scale estimates, not retail replacement quotes for an individual owner.
