To check whether Windows 11 Pro is activated, open Start > Settings > System > Activation and read the status. But an “activated” message confirms only that Windows has been activated on the device; it does not prove the key came from a legitimate seller or that the license terms cover your use. Check the installed edition, the entitlement and purchase records, and the source of the license as well.
Check the activation status and installed edition
- Open Start > Settings > System > Activation.
- Note the activation status and any error code shown on the page.
- Confirm that the installed edition is Windows 11 Pro, then compare it with the edition named on your receipt, order confirmation, or other license record.
Microsoft lists this page as the place to check activation. The status may say Windows is activated, activated with a digital license, or activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account. A device that is not activated will also be identified there. These messages describe activation, not the full history or legitimacy of the license. Microsoft’s activation guidance explains that activation pairs a product key or digital entitlement with the device’s hardware configuration. It does not evaluate whether the copy itself is authentic or guarantee that Windows is genuine.
Understand what counts as a Windows license
You may have a valid Windows entitlement without a product key you can view. Microsoft describes two common forms: a digital license associated with a device or account, and a 25-character product key. A Microsoft Store purchase of a Windows Pro upgrade provides a digital license rather than a key. Finding no printed code, therefore, does not by itself mean you lack a license. Microsoft’s activation page describes activation methods, and its product-key guide explains where to look for a key.
Where to look for the key or purchase record
- New PC: The key may be preinstalled, included with the packaging, or printed on a Certificate of Authenticity (COA) attached to the device. The PC manufacturer may help identify the supplied license.
- Boxed retail copy: Check the label or card inside the box.
- Digital retailer purchase: Check the confirmation email or the retailer’s digital locker.
- Purchase from Microsoft: Check the confirmation email and Microsoft account order history. A Store-bought Pro upgrade may appear as a digital license, not a key.
- Organization or volume licensing: The organization’s licensing portal or administrator may manage access to keys.
Do not post or send your complete product key in a public forum. For troubleshooting, use the official support channel or contact the seller without exposing the code publicly.

Assess whether the license is genuine
Activation is one check, not proof of provenance. To assess legitimacy, review where Windows came from, whether the seller is Microsoft or a trusted retailer, what edition and entitlement your order documents, and whether the license terms cover this device and use. Keep the receipt, order confirmation, and any packaging or license materials.
Microsoft describes COAs, proof-of-license labels, and holograms as authenticity indicators where they apply. Their presence can support an assessment, but no single mark or an “activated” status establishes that a key was sold through a legitimate channel or is being used within its terms. Microsoft recommends buying from Microsoft or a trusted retailer and discusses these indicators and validation in its About Genuine Windows guidance.

Be especially careful with a key from an unfamiliar marketplace or Windows included with a used PC: Microsoft notes that counterfeit-related validation failures are common for some auction purchases and Windows on used PCs. That warning is not proof that every such purchase is counterfeit. Ask the seller for clear proof of license and the terms that apply to your purchase; if they cannot provide it, successful activation alone cannot settle the question.

A key error is a reason to investigate, not automatic proof of counterfeiting. A mismatch between the installed edition and the license, use beyond the license terms, a change of hardware after repair, or counterfeit software can all be involved in activation or validation problems.

Check for a Home-versus-Pro mismatch
Windows 11 Home and Pro are separate editions for activation. A Home license will not activate Pro, and a Pro entitlement will not make a Home installation show as Pro. If you own a Pro digital license but Home is installed, Microsoft’s Activation troubleshooter guidance describes an upgrade-to-Pro path. If your entitlement is for Home, use the matching edition or obtain a Pro license.
Use the displayed error to choose the next step
Start from Settings > System > Activation. If you have a valid key for the installed edition, Microsoft says you can enter it using Change product key. Error 0x800704CF indicates that no valid Windows license was found for the device. Check the key and edition against your purchase record, then consult Microsoft’s activation error guidance for the message you see. If the problem remains, contact the seller or your organization’s licensing administrator; Microsoft support may also help determine the next step.

If Windows says it is not genuine after a repair or hardware change, follow the relevant validation or activation guidance rather than assuming the key is counterfeit. Microsoft notes that repairs can result in a different key being installed, and that using a license on more devices than its terms allow can also cause problems. Validation is distinct from activation: it checks whether Windows is genuine and whether critical licensing files have been damaged, deleted, or removed.
