A Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W can run a compact internet radio, but it is only the computer inside the project—not a complete radio. Add a microSD card, suitable power, Wi-Fi access and an audio output matched to your amplifier or speakers, then install a player such as Volumio and test it where you plan to listen.
Choose a build that fits your setup
DIY: Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W
The Zero 2 W measures 65 mm × 30 mm, supports 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, and has a microSD slot, USB OTG and a 40-pin HAT-compatible footprint. Raspberry Pi lists internet radios among suitable Zero projects. The board has neither Ethernet nor a built-in headphone or speaker jack, so plan the audio connection instead of expecting sound directly from the board. Ready-made internet radio
A ready-made radio may reduce assembly and configuration, but features and connections vary by model. Choose one by checking its supported stations, network connection and audio outputs against your needs; no specific complete-radio model is established here.
Gather the parts for the Pi build
- Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W: the host that runs the player.
- microSD card: the boot and software storage. Raspberry Pi documentation describes microSD as common boot media; the cited setup instructions do not establish one universal capacity requirement.
- Suitable 5 V micro-USB power supply: use an appropriate supply for the board, following Raspberry Pi’s power guidance.
- Audio output: use a compatible USB DAC or Raspberry Pi DAC, or another supported route that connects to your amplifier or speakers. Volumio Standard lists USB 2.0 DAC and native Raspberry Pi DAC support, but compatibility depends on the specific hardware.
- Case, optional: useful for protecting a small installation, provided it accommodates the board and any audio hardware.

Install Volumio and complete first boot
Volumio’s Get Started page lists version 4.119, released 24 March 2026. Its documented process is to download and extract the image, flash it to storage, boot the device, and finish configuration in the app or a browser.
- Download and extract the Volumio image. Use the image provided through the Volumio Get Started page.
- Write the image to the microSD card. Use Raspberry Pi Imager or the supported image-writing route described by Volumio. Select the correct target card before writing; imaging erases its existing contents.
- Prepare Wi-Fi before boot if possible. For a headless Pi that must connect immediately, Raspberry Pi recommends configuring Wi-Fi before boot. Enter the home network’s SSID and password in Imager when available, and set the WLAN country if prompted or required. See Raspberry Pi’s headless setup guidance and wireless configuration documentation.
- Insert the card and power on. Allow the first boot to finish. If Volumio offers its hotspot for initial configuration, connect to it and follow the setup flow.
- Open the setup interface. Use the Volumio app or, from a device on the same home network, try
http://volumio.local. Complete the guided configuration.
Connect and select the audio output
Connect the chosen DAC or audio board and the amplifier or powered speakers, then select the detected output in Volumio’s settings. Start at a low volume and raise it gradually after confirming sound. A DAC that does not appear is an audio-hardware or compatibility issue to check before troubleshooting Wi-Fi: verify its connection and whether that model is supported by the software and board.

The Zero 2 W does not provide analog audio output on its own. Volumio’s listed USB 2.0 DAC and native Raspberry Pi DAC support are options, not a guarantee that every DAC will work. For connection and recognition guidance, see Volumio’s network audio endpoint guide.
Find a station and test it in place
Browse Volumio’s integrated web-radio directory or add a station stream yourself. The available sources explain both built-in stations and user-added streams, but a directory entry or stream endpoint can change. If one station fails, try another entry or check that station’s current stream URL rather than assuming every station uses a compatible, permanent address. See Volumio’s audio-source guidance.

Let a station play from the radio’s intended location for a while, then check it again at the time you expect to listen. This helps reveal whether the location’s Wi-Fi signal, audio chain or a particular stream is causing trouble.

Buffering or disconnections
First move the radio nearer the access point and reduce avoidable network congestion. Then try a second station: if that plays normally, the first station’s stream may be the issue; if several fail, investigate the local connection. Volumio says poor connectivity can cause disconnections and slow response. Its 2022 troubleshooting article suggests at least 75 Mb/s, but that is Volumio’s guidance—not a verified universal minimum for internet radio. See Volumio’s network troubleshooting advice.

Device missing during setup
- Check that the Pi is powered and allow boot to complete.
- Confirm that your phone or computer is on the intended home network.
- Use Volumio’s first-setup hotspot if offered, or try the documented browser route.
- For a headless installation, check the saved Wi-Fi credentials and WLAN country configuration.
No sound
- Confirm that Volumio has the intended output selected and recognizes the DAC.
- Check the amplifier’s selected input and the cable and speaker connections.
- Start with a low volume and raise it only after confirming the signal path.
Wi-Fi remains weak or unstable
The Zero 2 W uses 2.4 GHz 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, so placement and obstacles matter. It has no built-in Ethernet port; a wired connection requires additional compatible hardware. If you add an adapter or audio board, confirm that it suits your particular setup before relying on it.
