Choose a Bluetooth speaker if you want to send audio from a nearby phone or other paired device, especially when you want to carry the speaker around. Neither is automatically better for sound or everyday use: the right fit depends on where you listen, what you play, and whether you want your phone involved. Some internet radios also include Bluetooth, so you can have both playback options in one device.
How internet radio and Bluetooth speakers play audio
The main difference is the route the audio takes. Bluetooth is a direct connection between paired devices; as Bose explains, it works without going through a router. With a typical Bluetooth speaker, a phone or another paired device supplies the audio. Logitech Support notes that this may be music from an app or files stored on the device.
An internet radio or Wi-Fi speaker can instead connect to a cloud service and play its stream directly. Logitech gives services such as Amazon Prime Music, Spotify, iHeartRadio, and TuneIn as examples; actual service support varies by device. In this setup, a phone may control playback without being the device that sends the audio.
Which one fits your listening habits?
| Your priority | Best starting point | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Start internet stations from the device at a regular listening spot | Internet radio | Check that it supports your preferred stations, podcasts, or directory, and that Wi-Fi and internet access are available. |
| Play audio from different phone apps or local files | Bluetooth speaker | Your paired phone supplies the sound, so you can use apps and files that play on that device. |
| Keep using your phone while audio plays | Wi-Fi speaker or internet radio | Direct cloud playback can leave the phone free for other tasks. Service support and controls depend on the model and app. |
| Listen away from home | Battery-powered Bluetooth speaker | Check the specific model’s runtime, weight, and weather or dust rating. Portable internet radios are also available. |
| Have both built-in radio access and phone-fed audio | Internet radio with Bluetooth | Confirm the model includes the stations and Bluetooth functions you want; regional versions can differ. |
Connectivity, phone use, and interruptions
Internet radio needs internet access
An internet radio needs a working internet connection to fetch online stations, as well as access to the device’s station directory or supported services. If the connection fails, online radio playback may not be available. Check whether your preferred stations are supported rather than assuming every internet radio offers the same directory.

Bluetooth needs a source, not necessarily the internet
A basic Bluetooth speaker can play audio from a nearby paired device without the speaker itself connecting to the internet. If you stream from an online app, the phone may still need its own internet connection; locally stored audio does not.
Consider what happens when you use your phone
Bluetooth playback relies on the phone or other paired source, so calls or other phone activity can interrupt or change the listening experience. With direct Wi-Fi playback, a phone can act as a controller instead of the audio source, but the exact behavior depends on the model and app.

Home listening or portable listening?
An internet radio is often a convenient choice for a regular home listening spot: station controls and playback are built into the device. A Bluetooth speaker is often a natural choice when you want to pair a phone and move the speaker between rooms or take it with you. These are common use cases, not rules: battery-powered portable internet radios exist, and some hybrid radios add Bluetooth.
Before choosing a portable model, check the specifications that matter for your use:

- Dual 3.5” woofers provide balanced & clear sound Dual high range tweeters deliver crisp highs Bluetooth 5.0 provides up to 120 ft of range
- Battery: Confirm whether the device runs on a battery and how runtime is specified. Runtime varies by model and use; it is not guaranteed by the device category.
- Durability: Look for the model’s stated water- and dust-resistance rating if you plan to use it outdoors.
- Controls: Check whether you can select stations or manage playback on the device, through an app, or both.
- Station and service access: Verify that your preferred stations and streaming services are supported.
Sound quality is a model-by-model decision
There is no established category-wide winner for sound quality. JBL argues that Wi-Fi can carry HD audio and contrasts it with Bluetooth compression, but that protocol-level claim does not show that every Wi-Fi speaker sounds better than every Bluetooth speaker. The result depends on the speaker’s design, audio source and codec, service, signal conditions, and listener preferences. If sound is the deciding factor, compare specific models and look for independent tests rather than choosing by connection type alone.

Hybrid devices show that this does not have to be an either-or choice. Sangean lists the WFR-28BT as an internet radio over Wi-Fi with Bluetooth streaming and portable operation. Its product page advertises access to more than 15,000 internet stations; directories and product support can change, so verify current availability and compatibility before buying.

- The portable radio features dual 3.5-inch woofers and 1-inch tweeters for stereo sound

Kenwood’s CR-ST90S is another manufacturer-documented example of a combination device. Check the exact model and regional version for the features you need. These examples establish that hybrid products exist, not that every radio includes Bluetooth or every Bluetooth speaker can receive internet radio.
Quick Recap
How to make the final choice
- Decide what supplies the audio. Choose a device that gets stations directly if you want built-in internet radio. Choose Bluetooth if you want a phone or another paired source to play its apps or local files through the speaker.
- Match the connection to where you listen. For online stations, confirm Wi-Fi and internet access where the device will sit. For a portable speaker, check that it pairs with your source and has the battery and durability specifications you need.
- Check the exact model’s features. Verify station directories, streaming-service support, controls, battery operation, and any water- or dust-resistance rating against the manufacturer’s current information.
- Consider a hybrid if both matter. An internet radio with Bluetooth can provide direct station access and phone-fed audio in one device, but confirm the features for the particular model and region.
