Windows does not document a universal way to assign a different custom shortcut in current Windows 11 settings. If you have seen Alt+Shift, that shortcut is documented for switching layouts with the legacy desktop Language bar, not as a universal Windows default.
Switch keyboard layouts with Windows+Space
Windows+Space cycles through keyboard layouts already installed on your PC. Hold the Windows key and press Space; press Space again to move to the next layout. You can also choose a layout from the input-language icon on the taskbar. These options change the active keyboard layout, not the Windows display language. Microsoft’s Windows 11 and Windows 10 language settings guidance covers adding and switching keyboard layouts.
Check that another layout is installed
- In Windows 11, open Settings > Time & language > Language & region.
- Select the ellipsis next to the language you use, then choose its language options. Look under Keyboards for installed layouts.
- To add one, choose the option to add a keyboard in those language options and select the layout you need. In Windows 10, the Settings page may be labeled Language.
- Press Windows key + Space and cycle through the available layouts.
If Windows+Space does nothing, check whether only one keyboard layout is installed. With no second layout to switch to, the shortcut has nothing to cycle through. A separate full language pack is not always required, although Windows may require the matching language to be installed if the layout you want is not listed.
Can you assign a different keyboard-language shortcut?
Microsoft’s current Windows 11 and Windows 10 settings guidance documents Windows+Space for cycling layouts, but does not establish a universal custom-shortcut remapping procedure for current Windows 11 builds. The setting named Use the desktop language bar when it’s available controls which input interface is shown; it is not documented as a shortcut remapper.

Microsoft also documents Alt+Shift for switching layouts in the context of the desktop Language bar. Its instructions include older Windows 10 and Windows 8 Control Panel navigation, so treat Alt+Shift as legacy Language bar guidance—not a confirmed default or a shortcut that can be assigned universally on every current Windows version. Microsoft’s Language bar instructions describe that context.
Choose between the taskbar icon and the Language bar
Windows offers a point-and-click taskbar input-language icon, while the legacy desktop Language bar can be used instead. Both let you work with installed input layouts; the interface preference does not itself change which layouts are installed.

- In Windows 11, open Settings > Time & language > Typing.
- Open Advanced keyboard settings.
- Under Switching input methods, turn on Use the desktop language bar when it’s available to use the legacy bar. Turn it off to use the taskbar input icon.
Windows 10 also has Advanced keyboard settings, though labels and navigation can vary by version. If the taskbar input-language icon is missing, check whether the legacy desktop Language bar is enabled: enabling it hides the taskbar icon, and disabling it restores the icon.
Keyboard layout and display language are different
A keyboard layout determines which characters key presses produce. Changing the layout alone does not change the language used for Windows menus and other interface text. Conversely, after changing the Windows display language, the keyboard layout may also change. At the sign-in screen, check the active layout before entering your password. Microsoft’s language settings guidance explains both input and display language settings.

Windows 10 support status
Microsoft states that free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. Windows 10 PCs continue to work, but Microsoft recommends moving to Windows 11. The keyboard-layout steps above address the settings task; this support date concerns the operating system’s update and assistance status. Microsoft’s Windows 10 support notice gives the details.
