A keyboard layout changes the characters your keys enter. It does not, by itself, change the language of Windows’ menus and other interface text.
Add a keyboard layout in Windows 11
- Open Settings > Time & language > Language & region.
- Under the relevant language, open its additional options and select Language options.
- In the Keyboards section, check whether the layout you want is already installed.
- If it is not listed, select Add a keyboard, then choose the layout.
If the layout is not available in that language’s list, look under the language that matches the layout. Install that language if needed. You do not always need a full language pack just to use a keyboard layout: the layout may already be available under another installed language.
Add a keyboard layout in Windows 10
- Open Settings > Time & language > Language.
- Select the relevant language, then open Options.
- Under Keyboards, check the installed layouts.
- If the one you need is absent, add it. If it is not offered, select or install the language that matches that layout.
These steps are for PCs that still run Windows 10. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025.
Switch between installed keyboard layouts
- Taskbar: Select the input language icon, then choose the layout you want.
- Cycle forward: Hold the Windows key and press Space.
- Cycle backward: Press Windows+Shift+Space.
If Windows+Space does nothing, check whether you have more than one keyboard layout installed. The shortcut may have no layout to switch to when only one is installed.

Keyboard layout and Windows display language are different
A keyboard layout determines which characters are entered by the keys; the Windows display language determines the language used for interface text. Adding or switching a layout does not change the display language. Changing the display language is a separate operation, and it can also change the selected keyboard layout. At sign-in, check the input indicator before typing a username or password, especially if you use a password that depends on particular key positions.
Fix a missing taskbar input indicator
In Windows 11, open Settings > Time & language > Typing > Advanced keyboard settings. If Use the desktop language bar when it’s available is selected, the legacy desktop Language bar replaces the taskbar input icon. Clear the setting to show the taskbar icon again.

If the icon is still missing, check whether the taskbar’s Input Indicator system icon is turned off. You can also use the desktop Language bar instead if you prefer it; it is an alternate way to switch layouts and may be hidden when only one layout is enabled.
