If an untouched bottle will not be used within 2 hours, refrigerate it promptly and use it within 24 hours. Once a baby has started drinking from a bottle, discard any remainder. Opened powder and opened ready-to-feed containers have different storage rules.
At a glance: the storage clocks
| What you have | Storage and time limit |
|---|---|
| Prepared formula at room temperature, before feeding starts | Use within 2 hours of preparation. |
| Prepared formula not yet fed, when it will not be used within 2 hours | Refrigerate promptly and use within 24 hours. |
| Bottle after feeding begins | Use within 1 hour from the start of feeding, then discard any remainder. |
| Opened powdered formula | Keep tightly closed in a cool, dry place; do not refrigerate. Most products should be used within 1 month of opening, but check the label. |
| Opened ready-to-feed container | Cover and refrigerate; discard after 48 hours if unused, following the product directions. |
The prepared-formula time limits are from the CDC’s Infant Formula Preparation and Storage guidance, dated May 14, 2026. The opened ready-to-feed guidance is from the AAP’s HealthyChildren.org page, updated February 25, 2026.
How long prepared formula lasts
Before a feeding begins
The 2-hour clock starts when formula is prepared. If the baby will not be fed within that period, put the bottle in the refrigerator promptly; use it within 24 hours. Refrigeration is for prepared formula that has not yet been fed to the baby.
After feeding starts
The 1-hour clock starts when feeding begins, not when the bottle was made. Discard whatever remains after that hour, and do not save a partly consumed bottle for another feeding. Formula that has contacted the baby’s saliva can allow bacteria to grow. Refrigerating a bottle after feeding starts does not reset or extend this limit.

How to store opened powder and ready-to-feed formula
Powdered formula
After opening, keep the container tightly closed in a cool, dry place. Do not store opened powder in the refrigerator. CDC says most powdered formulas should be used within 1 month of opening; check the specific container for its instructions and date. Discard formula after its “Use By” date.
Ready-to-feed formula
Ready-to-feed formula is sterile liquid that needs no water added. After opening a container, cover it and refrigerate it. The AAP’s HealthyChildren.org guidance says to discard it after 48 hours if unused; follow the particular product’s directions, which may differ.

- Read and follow the specific formula container’s preparation directions. Use water from a safe source.
- Measure the water first, then add exactly the amount of powder specified on the label. Incorrect dilution can affect a baby’s nutrition or hydration.
- Formula does not need to be warmed. If you choose to warm it, use warm running water and check a few drops on your wrist before feeding.
- Never microwave formula. Uneven heating can create hot spots that may burn the baby.
CDC’s May 14, 2026 guidance states that infant formula does not need to be warmed before feeding. FDA consumer guidance also says to follow package storage directions and discard bottle leftovers: Infant Formula: Safety Do’s and Don’ts.
