Find out what data it collects, why, who receives it, how long it is kept, and whether you can decline collection without losing features you want. Controls and consequences vary by model year, equipment, software, account status, and region, so a brand-level summary is not enough.
What data does a connected car collect?
Depending on the vehicle, its equipment, connected services, and your settings, data may include location and routes, driving behavior, vehicle identifiers, diagnostics and maintenance information, use of vehicle features and apps, and information imported from a paired phone or third-party app. Collection and transmission are not the same for every vehicle.
For example, Ford’s U.S. privacy notice describes identifiers, system status, diagnostics, vehicle analytics, and driving data, as well as location services and connected apps. Treat that as an example of one manufacturer’s U.S. disclosures, not a description of every car. Read Ford’s U.S. privacy notice.
Why is the data collected, and who can receive it?
Separate information needed to provide a feature you request from data used for safety or emergency functions, diagnostics and updates, product improvement, marketing, or personalization. Ask which purposes are optional and whether information collected for a feature is also used for other purposes.

Check the notice for possible recipients, including service providers, app providers, insurers, consumer reporting agencies, and other third parties. A driving-score, insurance, or connected-service program may create a separate route for data sharing; confirm what enrollment means before agreeing.
In January 2026, the FTC finalized an order settling allegations concerning GM and OnStar’s handling of precise location and driving data. The FTC said the order requires GM to obtain affirmative express consent before specified collection, use, or sharing, subject to exceptions. It also includes access and deletion request mechanisms, certain location controls, and a five-year restriction on specified disclosures to consumer reporting agencies. These requirements apply to GM and have stated exceptions; they are not rules for every automaker. The FTC described the case as involving data from millions of vehicles, which is case context rather than an estimate of how common any practice is across the market. FTC’s GM/OnStar order.

Can you turn off location tracking or other sharing?
Ask whether precise location, driving-behavior collection, app permissions, analytics, and account-linked sharing can each be declined separately. Check both the vehicle’s settings and the manufacturer’s account or app controls; one privacy switch may not cover every profile, device, app, or service.
Ford says that available options depend on the vehicle and system version, and that deleting the Ford app alone does not stop account-linked data sharing. Confirm the applicable controls for the exact car rather than assuming that removing an app or disabling one setting is enough.

As AP reported on November 5, 2025, Mozilla’s Lauren Hendry Parsons advised drivers to review permissions granularly: “There are permissions in your settings that you can make choices about,” and “Go through on a granular level and look at those settings where you can.” AP’s report on connected-car privacy settings.
What features might stop working if you limit data sharing?
Ask the seller or manufacturer which data choices are tied to the features you care about. Depending on the vehicle and setting, limiting collection may affect remote locking or vehicle location, navigation, roadside assistance, connected emergency services, diagnostics, or updates. These are possible trade-offs to verify—not guaranteed consequences for every model.

- Ask which specific data a feature needs, and whether the feature continues if you decline other uses of that data.
- Check whether the choice applies to a single feature, the entire vehicle, or an account shared across vehicles.
- Confirm whether changing a setting affects a safety or emergency function, and whether the limitation can be reversed.
How should you compare vehicles’ privacy practices?
Use the same questions for each exact model year, trim, and market. A side-by-side comparison is more useful than a general brand statement.

What should you delete before selling or buying a used car?
A used vehicle may still contain saved information or remain linked to a previous owner’s accounts. Before completing a purchase, ask the seller or dealer how to reset the infotainment system and modem, remove previous users, and transfer or cancel connected services. Follow the exact owner’s manual and manufacturer instructions.
When selling or trading in a car, work through the cleanup rather than relying on a factory reset alone:
- Remove saved contacts, app logins, digital content, location history, destinations, garage codes, and other personal information stored in the vehicle.
- Disconnect paired phones and devices, and remove the vehicle from associated manufacturer accounts and apps.
- Transfer or cancel connected subscriptions, such as satellite radio or hotspot service. A factory reset may not cancel them.
- Use the vehicle’s manual and manufacturer guidance to complete the reset and account-transfer steps for that model.
The FTC’s consumer guidance also advises removing stored data, disconnecting devices and vehicle apps, and canceling or transferring connected subscriptions when selling or donating a vehicle. FTC guide to removing personal information from a car.
Where can you get a vehicle-specific starting point?
AP reported that Privacy4Cars offers a free VIN-based vehicle privacy report and a service that can direct or assist with data requests. It can be a starting point, but verify the exact vehicle’s settings, owner’s manual, and current manufacturer notice before relying on it.
