Yes. If prepared formula was refrigerated promptly and is still within its storage window, you can warm it before feeding—but warming is optional. Hold the bottle under warm running water, keeping water out of the bottle and off the nipple, then test a few drops on your wrist. Never microwave formula: uneven heating can create hot spots that burn a baby’s mouth or throat.

How to warm refrigerated formula safely

  1. Check the storage time first. Warm only prepared formula that was refrigerated promptly and is still within the 24-hour refrigerated-use limit.
  2. Warm the bottle gently. Hold it under warm running water. Keep the water outside the bottle and away from the nipple. A bowl of warm water is another method described by the American Academy of Pediatrics’ HealthyChildren.org; do not heat prepared formula directly on the stove.
  3. Mix and test before feeding. Gently swirl the bottle, then place a few drops on the inside of your wrist. It should not feel too hot.

CDC says, “Infant formula does not need to be warmed before feeding.” If your baby accepts it cold, you can serve it cold; there is no need to buy a bottle warmer. The CDC’s formula preparation and storage guidance describes warm running water as the warming method.

How long prepared formula can be kept

These limits apply to prepared formula, not unopened formula. Refrigerating a bottle does not reset its time from preparation, and warming it does not extend the storage window.

Situation What to do
Prepared formula at room temperature, not yet fed Use within 2 hours of preparation. If it will not be used within that period, refrigerate it promptly.
Prepared formula refrigerated promptly, not yet fed Use within 24 hours of preparation.
Baby has started drinking from the bottle Use within 1 hour from when feeding begins, then discard any remainder. Do not refrigerate it for another feeding.

These handling limits are from the CDC. Once a baby drinks from a bottle, saliva can enter the formula and allow bacteria to grow. The FDA’s infant-formula safety guidance also advises against saving a partly consumed bottle.

What not to do

  • Do not microwave formula. Microwaves can heat unevenly, leaving hot spots that may burn a baby’s mouth or throat. This warning is shared by the FDA and CDC.
  • Do not let warming water enter the bottle or wet the nipple. Keep the feeding system separate from the water used to warm it.
  • Do not heat prepared formula directly on the stove. HealthyChildren.org recommends warm water rather than heating the formula itself; see its guidance on warming bottles and room-temperature limits.

When to follow different instructions

This guidance covers prepared formula refrigerated for a later feeding. Follow the product label and your pediatric clinician’s directions if they differ, particularly when your infant has special health needs. Preparation precautions for powdered formula can also vary with an infant’s age and local water safety, as the CDC notes in its formula guidance. The cited guidance does not specify a special reheating temperature or a number of times a bottle may be rewarmed, so do not treat warming as a way to make formula safe beyond its storage limit.
