If your baby has already had formula that sat out beyond the recommended time, stop using that bottle, discard what remains, and contact your baby’s pediatric clinician or (in the United States) Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 for advice specific to the situation. Call 911 if the baby collapses, has a seizure, has trouble breathing, or cannot be awakened. A time limit helps prevent unsafe storage; it cannot predict whether one particular exposure will make a baby ill.

What to do now

  1. Take the bottle away and discard the rest. Do not offer more formula from a bottle that exceeded the recommended time limits. Discard any formula left after a feeding, since saliva in the bottle can allow bacteria to grow. CDC guidance
  2. Get case-specific advice. Contact the baby’s pediatric clinician. In the United States, you can also call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222. Its advice depends on details including the baby’s age, what and how much was consumed, and any symptoms; Poison Control advises calling for infants younger than six months. Outside the United States, contact your local poison center or emergency service.
  3. Call 911 for an emergency. Seek emergency help if the baby collapses, has a seizure, has trouble breathing, or cannot be awakened. For other symptoms or concerns, ask the clinician or Poison Control what to do next.

Why the baby’s age and health matter

CDC says extra precautions are needed when preparing formula for babies younger than two months, babies born prematurely (before 37 weeks of pregnancy), or babies with weakened immune systems. Cronobacter can live in the environment and in dry foods such as powdered infant formula; infection in infants is rare but serious. These facts do not show that a particular bottle was contaminated or establish the chance that a baby will become ill after drinking it. CDC: Cronobacter infection and infants

How long prepared formula can sit out

The CDC’s storage guidance gives two separate limits. Follow the earlier applicable limit; the one-hour feeding window is not extra time added after the two-hour preparation window.

  • After preparation: Use prepared formula within two hours.
  • After feeding begins: Use it within one hour from the start of feeding.
  • If a prepared bottle will not be used within two hours: Refrigerate it promptly and use it within 24 hours.
  • After a feeding: Discard what remains in the bottle.

These are prevention and storage rules, not a way to determine whether an exposure has caused harm. If you do not know when the formula was prepared or when feeding began, contact the clinician or Poison Control rather than judging safety by appearance or smell. What can and cannot be concluded about one exposure

The CDC’s guidance explains how to prepare and store formula; it does not say that every bottle left out too long will cause illness, and it does not provide a post-exposure treatment plan. Poison Control can offer individualized guidance, but the appropriate advice depends on information such as the baby’s age, amount consumed, time out, formula type, symptoms, and medical history. The cited guidance does not quantify the risk from a single exposure.
