Choose a basket-style air fryer when crisp results in smaller batches matter most. Choose a toaster oven when you need more room for larger foods and want oven-like jobs such as toasting, baking, or broiling. A toaster oven with an air-fry mode can bridge the two, but it may not crisp as well as a dedicated air fryer.
How to choose between a toaster oven and an air fryer

Why a dedicated air fryer often crisps better
Air-frying is a form of convection cooking: a fan moves hot air around food. Consumer Reports describes air fryers as using a higher-speed fan that directs a hot airstream onto the food. A smaller cooking space can concentrate heat around a batch, which helps explain why dedicated air fryers generally produce crispier results than toaster ovens with an air-fry setting. What toaster ovens do better
A toaster oven’s main advantage is versatility. Depending on the model, it can toast bread, bake, broil, roast, and reheat food. Its interior may also accommodate larger items than a basket-style air fryer, but dimensions—not the appliance category alone—determine what will fit. If you are considering an air-fry toaster oven, check whether it includes a dedicated basket and whether its usable cooking area suits your normal batch size. Consumer Reports’ buying guide
Is one more energy-efficient?
There is no supported current, category-wide energy comparison showing that air fryers always use less energy than toaster ovens, or vice versa. The U.S. EPA’s toaster-oven scoping report, published in November 2011, said widely adopted U.S. procedures for measuring toaster-oven energy use were not available at that time; it did not compare toaster ovens with air fryers. Its findings therefore cannot establish which appliance costs less to run today. Read the EPA report

Check these details before buying
- Measure the counter footprint. Make sure the appliance fits where you plan to use it, with the clearance required by its manufacturer.
- Check usable cooking dimensions. Consider the actual food, tray, or basket you expect to cook; exterior size and advertised capacity alone may not answer whether it will fit.
- Match the appliance to your usual batch. A basket-style model suits smaller portions when crisping is the priority; a toaster oven may suit larger or differently shaped foods.
- Confirm the functions you will use. Toaster-oven features vary, and an air-fry setting does not make every model equivalent to a dedicated air fryer.
