Yes. MySQL Community Server can run natively on Apple silicon when you download a macOS ARM64 build. Oracle’s verified MySQL 8.0.46 listing offered ARM64 installers for macOS 15; choose ARM64 rather than x86_64 for native execution. Package availability varies by MySQL release and macOS version, so check Oracle’s current platform selector before downloading.

Does MySQL work on Apple silicon Macs?

Yes. Apple silicon Macs use ARM-based processors, and Oracle listed a native macOS ARM 64-bit package for MySQL Community Server 8.0.46. In that listing, macOS 15 (Sequoia) packages were also described as compatible with macOS 14 (Sonoma). These details apply to the version and operating systems shown in that listing; verify the current options for your specific release and macOS version on Oracle’s MySQL Community Server download page.

Should you download ARM64 or x86_64?

Download choice What it means on an Apple silicon Mac When it makes sense
macOS ARM 64-bit (ARM64) A MySQL build for Apple silicon’s processor architecture; it runs natively. Choose this when Oracle lists it for your MySQL release and macOS version. The verified 8.0.46 listing included ARM64 packages.
macOS x86_64 An Intel-architecture build. On supported macOS versions, Apple silicon can run Intel apps through Rosetta translation. Consider it only if you need a release or tool that is not available as ARM64, and confirm it works with your setup.

“ARM64” and “x86_64” are architecture labels, not different database editions. Selecting the matching ARM64 package is the straightforward route to native execution; the official sources cited here do not provide a performance comparison.

What are the installation options for a native Mac package?

Oracle’s MySQL 8.0 macOS guide documents a DMG package installer and a compressed TAR archive. The guide describes the following differences:

Can an Intel MySQL build run through Rosetta?

Apple says Rosetta can translate Intel apps on Apple silicon through macOS 27 and recommends replacing Intel apps with Apple silicon versions for optimal performance and future compatibility. Apple’s guidance says that starting with macOS 28, Rosetta functionality will be available only for certain older, unmaintained games that rely on Intel-based frameworks. That makes x86_64 a fallback, not the best assumption for a long-lived MySQL setup. See Apple’s guidance on using Intel-based apps on a Mac with Apple silicon.

Does the MySQL Docker image count as a supported Mac installation?

Not according to Oracle. Oracle’s MySQL 8.4 Reference Manual says the MySQL-team Docker images are built specifically for Linux; other platforms are unsupported and use is at the user’s risk. Docker may be an option for local development, but do not treat Oracle’s Linux-targeted image as an officially supported native macOS installation. See Oracle’s MySQL 8.4 Docker deployment documentation.

What about MySQL 8.4 LTS on ARM64?

The available Oracle download-page information for MySQL 8.4.11 LTS did not establish whether a macOS ARM64 server package is offered. Do not infer 8.4 support from the separate MySQL 8.0.46 listing: check the live 8.4 download selector for the exact platform choices before planning an installation.

Which route should you use?

  • For native Mac execution: select a macOS ARM64 package when it is listed for the MySQL release and macOS version you need.
  • If only an Intel package meets a requirement: Rosetta is a possible fallback through macOS 27, but Apple’s stated macOS 28 limitation makes it a less durable choice.
  • If you are considering Docker: account for Oracle’s warning that its MySQL-team images target Linux and are unsupported on other platforms.
