You can reduce OLED burn-in risk while gaming by avoiding long, unattended displays of paused games and static menus, using the panel-care features built into your TV or monitor, and limiting prolonged high-brightness exposure to fixed graphics. Gaming itself is not the problem: the concern is repeated exposure to bright elements that stay in the same place. Risk depends on the display model and usage, and there is no universal number of safe gaming hours.
How can I prevent OLED burn-in while gaming?
Game HUDs, console dashboards and paused screens can leave bright, fixed graphics in the same places for extended periods. Samsung specifically warns against playing games that display fixed images for a long time: Samsung Caribbean OLED TV burn-in guidance. LG also identifies a prolonged paused game and very high brightness over extended periods as potential risk factors: LG USA image burn-in guidance.
Make these practical changes without treating every session as a hazard:
- When stepping away, stop displaying a static image. Resume the game, turn off the display, or let its screen saver or sleep behavior take over. Avoid leaving a game paused, a dashboard open, or a menu on screen for long unattended stretches.
- Keep panel-care features enabled. Depending on the product, these may include pixel movement, logo dimming, and automatic panel compensation or cleaning. Use the settings and schedule specified for your model.
- Reduce prolonged bright static exposure. If a bright HUD or logo dominates repeated long sessions, use the display’s logo-dimming option if available, or lower brightness when practical. This does not mean you must give up HDR; the concern is extended high-brightness exposure to fixed content.
- Vary what is displayed when it suits your play. Changing games or content means fixed graphics are not held in the same positions continuously. Do not rely on variation as a substitute for the display’s care features.
These steps reduce risk; they cannot guarantee that persistent damage will never occur. How much risk a particular routine creates depends on the display and exposure. Manufacturer guidance does not establish a universal safe-hours threshold, brightness setting, or required break interval.

Can a game HUD cause OLED burn-in?
It can contribute to risk if bright HUD elements repeatedly occupy the same positions for prolonged periods. Samsung gives examples such as a racing speedometer, an action-game crosshair, and a health bar. The relevant factor is repeated or extended static exposure—not gaming as a category.
Where a game offers HUD controls, you can consider reducing or hiding elements you do not need, but no specific HUD setting or gaming duration is established as universally safe. Prioritize avoiding long unattended pauses and using the display’s built-in protections.

Should I turn on Pixel Shift or logo dimming?
Use the panel-care options your particular TV or monitor provides, but do not assume every OLED exposes the same controls or uses the same names. Pixel Shift or a similarly named screen-movement feature shifts image position slightly at intervals. Logo dimming reduces the luminance of some fixed on-screen graphics. Availability, operation and menu paths vary by product generation and region.
| Protection | What it does | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Pixel Shift or Screen Shift | Moves the image or pixels slightly at intervals. | Samsung and LG describe these features in product guidance; some generations may move the image by default rather than offer a menu setting. Samsung guidance; LG Screen Shift guidance. |
| Logo dimming | Reduces the brightness of fixed graphics, though behavior and labels differ. | Samsung describes Low and High choices, with High reducing fixed-logo brightness further; LG describes automatic logo luminance adjustment. Check your model’s guide. Samsung guidance; LG guidance. |
| Screen saver or sleep | Replaces or turns off a static display after inactivity, where supported. | Behavior depends on the model and what is on screen. LG says some TVs activate a screen saver after approximately two minutes of detected inactivity on specified no-signal or paused-video scenarios; behavior can differ in built-in apps. LG USA guidance. |
| Pixel refresh or cleaning | Runs a panel-maintenance process according to the display’s design. | Follow the model’s manual for automatic and manual operation. Samsung notes that its described Pixel Refresh process turns the TV off for more than an hour and that support varies by model. Samsung Hong Kong guidance. |
Let automatic compensation or cleaning cycles run as the manufacturer describes. Do not repeatedly trigger manual refresh as routine prevention: the reviewed guidance does not establish that as necessary or beneficial. LG’s USA support page says its Pixel Refresher runs after 2,000 cumulative hours and takes about an hour after the TV is turned off; those figures describe LG guidance and should not be applied to other brands or models. LG USA guidance.

Is image retention the same as burn-in?
No. A faint image that appears briefly and fades after you change content may be temporary image retention. Persistent burn-in lasts much longer and can remain visible while other content is playing. LG describes burn-in as a form of image retention that lasts much longer and is usually visible even with other content. LG USA image burn-in guidance.
If a mark fades after the display is off for a while or after you watch varied content, that is different from a persistent mark. If it remains visible across other content, follow the support instructions for your exact model rather than assuming that every ghost image has the same cause or remedy.

What should I do if my OLED has a ghost image?
- Check whether it persists. Switch to different content and, if the mark is faint, turn the display off for a while. LG says short-term retention can often be mitigated this way or by watching varied content. LG guidance on image retention.
- Consult the support page or manual for your exact model. If it recommends a pixel refresh or cleaning cycle for the symptom, follow its instructions, including any timing or power-off requirements. Samsung’s Caribbean support page advises using Pixel Refresh for image retention and contacting service if the issue persists. Samsung support guidance.
- Contact the manufacturer if the mark remains. A refresh process is not a guaranteed repair for persistent panel damage. Avoid treating third-party “burn-in fixer” videos as proven cures.
Do OLED panel types have different gaming burn-in risk?
Available evidence does not support a universal ranking of OLED panel types for gaming. In a 2023 accelerated investigation, RTINGS reported that after two months on a static CNN schedule, its tested Samsung S95B and Sony A95K QD-OLED televisions showed signs of permanent image retention, while its tested LG C2 and G2 WOLED televisions were clean at that checkpoint. RTINGS described the exposure as extreme and estimated it as equivalent to roughly four hours of CNN daily for about eight months without changing channels or watching anything else. That equivalence describes the test schedule; it is not a predicted failure time for a gamer. The results cover specific older TV samples, not every current television or monitor, and RTINGS noted uncertainty about whether QD-OLED monitor panels behave the same. RTINGS accelerated investigation.
When comparing specific displays, look up documented support for screen movement, logo dimming, screen saver behavior, pixel cleaning and warranty coverage for the exact model and country. Manufacturer features and warranty terms vary by product and region; check the warranty that applies to your display rather than assuming all OLED products have the same coverage.
