Before buying a Chromebook for school, confirm that the exact model will remain supported, runs the student’s required apps, and is allowed by the school. Then compare its screen, keyboard, portability, connections, and total cost with the student’s day-to-day needs. A Chromebook that meets general specifications may still be a poor fit if the school blocks personal devices or a required app does not work on it.
Start with the student’s school requirements
Make a short list before comparing devices. Include the school platforms and apps the student must use, required assessment tools, file types, accessibility needs, and whether Android apps are necessary. A web version of a service may be preferable when it meets the class’s needs; Google’s school deployment guidance notes that Android apps use local storage and may vary in suitability by device. Google’s guidance for choosing and deploying apps on Chromebooks can help frame the questions, but the school’s actual app list should determine what to test.
- Which learning platforms, classroom apps, and assessment tools are required?
- Does the student need Android apps, or are browser-based versions sufficient?
- Which file formats and features must work, including editing or submitting assignments?
- Are touchscreen input, a stylus, camera, particular screen characteristics, or accessibility features needed?
- Will the student need to work without an internet connection?
Ask whether the school permits and manages personal Chromebooks
Contact the school or district before purchasing. School accounts are separate from personal accounts, and administrators can restrict apps, websites, services, and device settings. A privately purchased Chromebook may therefore not behave like one issued by the school. Ask whether a personal device can sign in, whether it must be enrolled or managed, and whether the school has device or accessory requirements. Google’s Chromebook guidance for school use explains that managed devices can have administrator-set restrictions.
Check the exact model’s ChromeOS update date
Google says ChromeOS devices receive 10 years of updates, but that does not mean every Chromebook has 10 years of support left when you buy it. The published automatic update schedule is specific to the device or platform. Google identifies the Auto Update Expiration (AUE) date as the most reliable way to gauge a device’s age and remaining official support. Look up the exact model in Google’s Auto Update policy table and verify the date on the device before buying, especially if it is used or discounted.

For a used Chromebook, a support date alone does not establish the unit’s physical condition, speed, or battery health. Check those separately, along with the charger, return terms, and whether the device remains enrolled in an organization. Ask the seller and school about enrollment status; do not assume a factory reset removes an organization’s management.
Match apps and hardware to the actual workload
Check the requirements for each required app rather than treating one memory or storage figure as a guarantee. For school deployments that use Android apps, Google generally recommends at least 4 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage. That is a scoped recommendation, not a universal Chromebook specification or a promise that every app will perform well. Specific apps or workloads may need more resources or particular hardware behavior. Google recommends testing selected apps on a small number of managed devices before deploying them broadly. Review Google’s school app deployment guidance and, where possible, test the student’s actual apps on the shortlisted model.

Once compatibility is established, compare the specific configurations under consideration. Check manufacturer specifications and independent reviews for the exact model and configuration; do not infer real-world performance from a product-family name alone.
| What to compare | What to check |
|---|---|
| Memory and storage | Confirm the configuration meets the required apps’ needs. Google’s general recommendation of at least 4 GB RAM and 32 GB storage applies to school Android-app deployments, not every workload. |
| Screen | Assess size, readability, resolution, touch support, and whether the student needs a particular display feature. |
| Keyboard and trackpad | Check that the student can comfortably type and navigate for the kinds of assignments they do. |
| Portability | Compare the actual device’s weight and size with how it will be carried and used at school. |
| Ports and wireless | Confirm the connections needed for school peripherals, networks, and any required accessories. |
| Battery, warranty, and price | Use evidence for the particular model and configuration; compare warranty and return terms and the full price. No single battery-runtime or price figure applies to all Chromebooks. |
Confirm file handling and offline access
Google says school-managed Chromebooks can support some offline schoolwork, including editing documents, but offline access depends on the app and file. Have the student test the actual workflow before relying on it. Google also documents support for many Microsoft Office file types while noting limitations in some formats. Check the specific files and features the student must open, edit, and submit against Google’s Office-file compatibility guidance and offline Chromebook use guidance.

Check accessories and school-specific restrictions
Most Chromebooks work with common Bluetooth accessories such as mice, speakers, and headphones, but school restrictions can affect what is permitted. Confirm compatibility and school approval for any required peripheral. Check the candidate Chromebook’s own ports and wireless capabilities before buying a mouse, headphones, adapter, or other accessory. Google’s Bluetooth accessory guidance describes general compatibility, not a guarantee that a school-managed device will allow every accessory.

Google offers eligible older Chromebooks an extended-updates option, but opting in removes Android apps and Google Play, and the choice cannot be reversed. Before enabling it, check whether the exact device is eligible and whether the student depends on Play Store apps. Google explains the terms in its extended updates guidance.

A practical buying checklist
- Write down requirements: list school platforms, required apps, assessments, file types, accessibility needs, and any need for Android apps or offline work.
- Ask the school: confirm whether personal Chromebooks are allowed, whether enrollment or management is required, and which accounts, peripherals, or device features are supported.
- Verify model support: check the exact Chromebook’s AUE date in Google’s policy table, particularly for used or discounted devices.
- Test app and file compatibility: compare the required apps’ needs with the shortlisted configuration and test real school workflows when possible.
- Compare the actual devices: assess screen, keyboard, weight, ports, wireless, battery evidence, warranty, return terms, and total price for each exact model.
- For a used device, inspect the unit: check condition, battery, charger, organization enrollment, and return terms with the seller and school.
- Evaluate extended updates only if relevant: weigh the support option against losing Google Play and Android apps before opting in.
