For an illegal check to the head, start with NHL Rule 48: the accessible 2024–25 rule text says the head must be the main point of contact and the contact must have been avoidable. That does not make every head contact illegal. Rule 50 is the rulebook’s section on kneeing, but consult the current 2025–26 rulebook for its exact wording and penalty provisions.

The full 2025–26 Rule 50 text could not be verified here. For kneeing, use the rulebook itself rather than relying on a paraphrase or assuming a penalty progression. The NHL’s video explainer is a useful visual companion, not a substitute for the written rule: NHL Video Rulebook: Kneeing, Rule 50.
How to read Rule 48: illegal check to the head
The accessible 2024–25 NHL Official Rules say: “A hit resulting in contact with an opponent’s head where the head was the main point of contact and such contact to the head was avoidable is not permitted.” Treat this as prior-edition wording; it is not proof that the sentence is unchanged in 2025–26. The 2024–25 text is available in the NHL Official Rules 2024–2025.

That test has two central parts: the head was the main point of contact, and the head contact was avoidable. A clip showing contact with the head alone does not establish both. To assess a play, consider the surrounding circumstances:
- Was there head contact? Establish what made contact and when in relation to the hit.
- Was the head the main point of contact? Distinguish a hit directed primarily at the head from incidental head contact during a check through the opponent’s body.
- Was the contact avoidable? The rule’s considerations include whether the checker attempted to hit squarely through the opponent’s body, the opponent’s posture, and whether the opponent materially changed body or head position immediately before or at the time of the hit.
These are factors to consider together, not a shortcut in which one visible detail decides the call. A brief clip may omit the approach, posture, or last-moment movement that matters. For further context, see the NHL’s Rule 48 video explainer and its Department of Player Safety Rule 48 review.

- NHL 97 took the graphics even further ahead, using a full 3D engine, with motion captured polygonal players. Each goaltender has his own custom-painted mask and the original artwork can be seen inside the game with a special "Goalie Mask Viewer". NHL 97 also introduces play-by-play commentary, provided by well-known announcer Jim Hughson. For the first time since EA Hockey, national teams were added, but only Canada, the United States, and Russia have their own teams while the other two are selections of the best European players. Along with the PC, Mega Drive/Genesis and SNES versions, both the Sega Saturn and PlayStation version made their debut, although they were rushed and buggy. For instance, the shot speed in the Playstation and Saturn versions was so slow that some skaters could beat a slapshot down the ice. The cover of the game features Florida Panthers goaltender John Vanbiesbrouck.
How Rule 50 fits—and what to verify
The current rulebook identifies Rule 50 as Kneeing, and the NHL has published a video explainer dated September 23, 2024. Those sources establish the rule’s subject and provide a place to begin, but the exact current definition and penalty provisions should be checked in the 2025–26 rulebook. This article does not infer a definition, penalty level, or automatic suspension from the rule’s title or video page.
For a suspected kneeing play, read the current Rule 50 text first, then use the NHL’s Rule 50 video to help understand its application. The available Rule 48 factors should not be transferred to Rule 50 as though both rules use the same test.

On-ice penalties are separate from later discipline
An official’s in-game penalty and the league’s later supplemental discipline are distinct decisions. In an April 17, 2025 announcement, the NHL said Jesse Puljujärvi was suspended for two games for an illegal check to the head of Mitchell Chaffee. That case demonstrates that a suspension may follow an incident; it does not establish an automatic suspension or outcome for every similar-looking play. See the NHL Public Relations suspension announcement.
