AI journaling apps can prompt you, summarize an entry, or offer feedback, but those features may process private writing differently from a conventional journal. Apple Journal, Day One, and Rosebud illustrate why the useful comparison is not simply “AI or no AI”: it is what information informs the feature, where that information is processed, and how much control you have over using it.
What counts as an AI journal—and what does a traditional journaling app do?
“AI journal” is not one consistent feature set. It can mean prompts or titles generated from a single entry, feedback informed by journal content, or suggestions assembled from activity and other information on a device. A traditional journaling app may still offer templates, reminders, search, photos, and secure storage without generating feedback from your writing.
The distinction matters because a feature can use AI without building a lasting profile of everything you have written. Day One describes AI tools that work on an individual entry or selected entries. Rosebud describes personalized feedback and guidance based on entries. Apple Journal’s suggestions are generated from moments assembled on the device, and you choose which ones to add. These are different approaches, not interchangeable versions of “AI memory.”
How do Apple Journal, Day One, and Rosebud handle memory?
| App | What can inform the experience? | What the documented features do |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Journal | Suggested moments can draw on activities, media use, contacts, photos, significant locations, and mood logged by the user. | Journaling Suggestions assembles moments on device; users choose which suggestions to share with Journal. Apple’s privacy documentation details the categories. |
| Day One | An individual entry or selected entries, depending on the AI feature. | Its AI tools include Go Deeper Prompts, Title Suggestions, and Entry Highlights. Some features can use Apple Intelligence on supported devices; other AI processing uses Day One’s service. Day One’s AI guide describes the distinction. |
| Rosebud | Entries, account information, and preferences are used to provide the service, according to its privacy policy. | Rosebud describes personalized feedback and guidance while writing. Its policy also describes automated quality evaluations in which AI systems review real interactions, processed by machines and not reviewed by staff. Rosebud’s privacy policy explains its stated practices. |
Apple’s suggestions can use intimate context even though the suggestion-generation operation is described as on-device. Local processing answers where a particular operation happens; it does not mean the app never considers sensitive information. Apple says users choose which suggested moments to share with Journal.

Where does the writing go when an AI feature runs?
Apple Journal
Apple says Journaling Suggestions uses on-device processing, and that users choose which suggestions to share with journaling apps. For Journal entries, Apple says they are encrypted when an iPhone is locked with a passcode. The company documents end-to-end encryption for entries stored in iCloud when the account has default two-factor authentication and the device has a passcode. See Apple’s Journaling Suggestions & Privacy documentation for the stated conditions.
Day One
Day One describes end-to-end encryption for journal storage and says Basic users’ data is stored locally. That storage description is separate from what happens when an AI feature is invoked. For features that use Day One’s service, its guide says needed content is temporarily decrypted on the device, transmitted over HTTPS to Day One’s servers and an AI service, and processed to provide the feature. Some features can instead use Apple Intelligence on supported Apple devices. Day One says AI features require a Gold subscription. Review Day One’s app privacy guide alongside its AI feature guide.

Encryption of stored journal data should not be read as a promise that an AI operation never handles readable content temporarily. Day One’s own documentation distinguishes encrypted storage from processing required by some AI features.
Rosebud
Rosebud’s policy says account information, preferences, and entries are used to provide the service. It describes automated quality evaluation of real interactions by AI systems, processed by machines and not reviewed by staff. That statement does not establish that no service provider or processor can access content, nor does it by itself specify all encryption, retention, deletion, or processing-provider details. Read the current policy for the terms that apply to your account.

Which approach is more useful?
There is no independent head-to-head evidence here showing that AI feedback improves reflection or wellbeing. Usefulness depends on what you want from a journal and whether you want software to interpret your writing or related personal context.
- Choose contextual reminders if you want writing cues drawn from things such as places visited, photos, music, or workouts. Apple Journal’s documented suggestions are designed around those moments, with the user selecting what to add.
- Choose entry-level assistance if you want help working with a particular entry, such as a prompt, title, or highlights. Day One documents these options, with processing that varies by feature and device.
- Choose ongoing personalized guidance if feedback informed by your entries is the main attraction. Rosebud describes that workflow, but check its policy and controls before entrusting it with sensitive writing.
- Choose a conventional journal workflow if your priority is writing and keeping an archive, not receiving automated interpretation. You can still use prompts you create yourself and decide what, if anything, to share with another service.
These are workflow distinctions, not proof that one product produces better reflection. Product descriptions explain intended features; they do not establish a clinical or comparative benefit.

How to choose without treating “private” or “on-device” as a blanket guarantee
- Identify the feature you will actually use. A prompt generated from one entry, a cross-entry insight, and a suggestion based on device activity each require different inputs.
- Check the processing path for that feature. Look for whether it runs on the device, uses Apple Intelligence on a supported device, or sends content to the app provider and an AI service. Do not infer the answer from the app’s general encryption claim.
- Check account and device conditions. Apple’s iCloud end-to-end encryption statement has passcode and default two-factor-authentication conditions. Day One documents both local/secure storage and distinct AI processing routes.
- Look for choices over inputs and activation. Apple says users choose suggested moments to share and can manage suggestion categories. For other apps, verify the current controls and plan requirements in the app’s documentation before subscribing.
- Decide what you are comfortable storing or submitting. If an entry would be too sensitive to process through the documented route, leave it out of that feature or use a journal that does not send it for AI processing.
Policies and feature availability can change. Day One’s guide identifies AI features as Gold-only and notes that some behavior depends on supported Apple devices; current subscription prices are not established here. Rosebud’s available policy information does not provide enough detail to compare all of its encryption, retention, deletion, and provider practices comprehensively with Apple or Day One. The published descriptions are vendor statements, not independent privacy audits.
