Before trusting an AI journaling app with personal entries, check where it stores your data, what it sends to AI providers, whether anyone may use it to improve models, and what deletion actually removes. Review the app’s settings and its current privacy policy: an app and its AI provider may have different rules for processing, retention, and deletion.
Start by mapping where your journal data goes
“AI processing” does not tell you where a copy of your journal lives. Identify each place data may be stored: on your device, in the app’s account system, in a personal cloud account such as iCloud, or with a third-party provider. Look beyond the original entry, too. Transcripts, summaries, tags, conversation history, insights, and AI memories may be retained separately.
- Check whether entries sync across devices and whether device or service backups are created.
- Find out whether voice recordings or images are kept after transcription or image analysis.
- List the providers named for language models, transcription, hosting, analytics, and crash reporting, and note which data each receives.
For example, Pim’s policy, last updated June 17, 2026, says journal entries, moods, and conversations are stored on iPhone and, if enabled, in the user’s iCloud; it also describes distilled notes kept in a private encrypted cloud account and submitted text processed to generate a response. These are the developer’s descriptions, not an independent security audit. Pim privacy policy
Journaling App is a Chrome extension, not a typical mobile app: its policy, last updated January 16, 2026, describes entries and history stored in browser local storage, with selected content sent for AI coaching. It offers deletion and a “Save without coaching” choice. Journaling App privacy policy

Separate model training from provider processing
Ask two distinct questions: does the app or its provider use your content to train or improve models, and does a provider temporarily retain inputs or outputs while delivering the service? A no-training statement does not by itself mean that data is never retained.
- Look for an explicit training or service-improvement statement and whether it is opt-in, opt-out, or not configurable.
- Check whether the statement covers the journaling app’s AI integration, the provider’s API, or a separate consumer account you use directly.
- Check which content goes to each provider, including conversation text, transcripts, images, and generated responses.
MyJournalPal’s policy, last updated July 18, 2026, says the app sends conversation text to Anthropic and OpenAI, and to Google Gemini only when paid-service data terms are enabled. It says paid API inputs and outputs are not used for model training by default; check the current policy and configuration before relying on that description. MyJournalPal privacy policy
OpenAI’s US privacy policy describes controls for whether content can improve models, remembered details, export, chat or account deletion, and Temporary Chat. It says selected information is removed within 30 days, subject to the policy’s stated longer-retention conditions and cases where content was already de-identified and disassociated. Those terms describe OpenAI’s service; they should not be assumed to govern a journaling app’s API arrangement. OpenAI US privacy policy

Check retention for every kind of data
Look for a duration or deletion trigger for each category, rather than accepting a general statement that data is kept “as long as necessary.” Ask separately about entries, recordings, transcripts, conversations, summaries, memories, analytics, safety logs, and backups.

Sentari AI’s policy, last updated September 15, 2026, lists typed entries, voice recordings, transcripts, conversation messages, entry dates, tags, preferences, and generated summaries or insights. It says saved journal content and account information are retained until deletion or an account-deletion request. Sentari AI privacy policy
Unpack says resulting journal text, reflections, memories, and conversations remain until content or account deletion. Its policy describes source page images and audio as temporary processing inputs, while also allowing temporary provider retention for abuse or safety monitoring under API terms. Find out what deletion removes—and when
Deleting an entry, conversation, memory, or account may have different effects. Check the documented path, completion time, any grace period, backup behavior, and legal or safety exceptions. Confirm whether deletion also covers provider copies and derived material such as summaries or transcripts.
Meet Luna’s policy, effective September 29, 2026, version 1.1, describes account deletion with a seven-day grace period, full export, and journal isolation. It also says provider contracts forbid training and models retain nothing after responding. These are Luna’s policy statements, not independent verification of provider behavior. Do not infer an app’s deletion schedule from a provider’s consumer service policy. For example, OpenAI’s stated 30-day removal window applies to information selected for deletion from its service, with the exceptions described in that policy; it does not establish the deletion timing for an app that uses an API.

Use controls that limit what AI can access
Before entering sensitive material, check whether the app lets you disable AI features, keep an entry out of coaching, or inspect, edit, and forget stored memories. Find out whether one journal or session can be isolated from later AI responses. Such controls can reduce what is sent or reused without requiring you to stop using the app altogether.
Unpack describes an AI-processing setting that can disable or limit dependent features. Journaling App offers “Save without coaching” for selected content. Meet Luna’s policy describes journal isolation. Verify the current app version and settings labels, because controls and policies can change.

Check whether export includes only original entries or also transcripts, generated summaries, memories, settings, and account-linked information. If you may leave the service, download and review a copy before starting deletion; an export option is useful only if it captures the material you need in a usable form.

Review device permissions and security
Match permissions to features you actually use. If you do not record entries or add images, consider turning off microphone and camera or photo access. Check file and notification permissions as well, and whether text entry still works when recording or image permissions are disabled.
Security claims need specifics. “Encrypted” does not explain what is encrypted, where encryption keys are held, or who can access them. Review authentication and access controls, data security in transit and at rest, and what happens if someone compromises your device or account. Local storage may reduce the service’s access, but it makes device security—and potentially your own backups—more important.
The Federal Trade Commission’s Mobile Health App Developers: FTC Best Practices recommends minimizing data collection, limiting access and permissions, securing stored and transmitted data, deleting data when there is no longer a legitimate business need, and using privacy-protective defaults. These are useful checks for a journal app, but they do not certify any particular app.
A practical checklist before you write
- Open the app’s privacy settings and current privacy policy; note the app version, policy date, and your region.
- Map storage locations and backups for entries, media, transcripts, summaries, conversations, and memories.
- Identify each AI and other third-party provider, what it receives, and whether inputs or outputs may be retained.
- Confirm whether content is used for model training or improvement, and what account or service the setting actually covers.
- Find retention periods and deletion rules for each data type, including backups and temporary safety logs.
- Test export options and check whether you can disable AI, exclude individual entries, or manage memories.
- Review device permissions and account security against the features you use.
Policies are first-party descriptions, not independent audits, and their terms can change. When comparing apps, judge the dated policy and actual controls—not a “private” label alone.
