A VPN app can encrypt a connection from your device to the VPN provider, making traffic contents harder for someone monitoring your home Wi-Fi or ISP to read. It does not secure your router, repair an infected device, or make you anonymous: the VPN provider becomes an intermediary you must trust. What it protects depends on the app encrypting the traffic in question.
What a VPN protects on home Wi-Fi
When a VPN app is connected and encrypting an app’s traffic, that traffic travels through a protected tunnel between your device and a VPN server. A person observing the local Wi-Fi connection can generally see that data is being sent, but not read the encrypted contents. Your internet provider typically sees a connection to the VPN rather than the contents of that tunnel. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) describes this as obscuring traffic content, not making the user anonymous: FTC guidance on VPN apps.
This protection covers a connection segment—from your device to the VPN endpoint—not every link in the chain or every device in your home. It also depends on the app actually encrypting the relevant traffic; products and implementations can differ.
Who can still see or identify you?
The VPN provider
Your traffic passes through the VPN provider’s systems. The VPN changes which intermediary handles your traffic; it does not eliminate intermediaries or guarantee that nobody can observe it. Choose an app carefully: the FTC notes that some VPN apps may share data with third parties and may request sensitive permissions. Its 2018 discussion reported potential privacy and security risks among almost 300 VPN apps studied by researchers; that historical figure is not a current census or an estimate of how many apps are unsafe. Review an app’s permissions and privacy terms, and look for clear information about its encryption and data handling. The FTC’s VPN app guidance does not evaluate any particular service.

Websites and services
A website can still identify you through details you provide, such as an email address entered in a form. It may also be able to determine that a VPN is in use. A VPN therefore does not guarantee anonymity or prevent a service from associating activity with an account.
Your own device
A VPN does not remove malware, fix a compromised device, or replace device security features and software updates. Follow the FTC’s advice on securing internet-connected devices at home.

How a VPN differs from Wi-Fi encryption and HTTPS

These protections can complement one another. The FTC says most websites use encryption today; check for HTTPS or the browser’s lock indicator when visiting a site. A VPN adds a device-to-provider tunnel and changes which intermediary handles traffic; it does not make HTTPS unnecessary. See the FTC’s guidance on public Wi-Fi and encryption.
Secure the home network as well as the VPN connection
A VPN is not a substitute for securing the router. The FTC recommends using WPA3 Personal, or WPA2 Personal if WPA3 is unavailable, setting unique router administrator credentials, and keeping router software up to date. If an old router supports neither WPA2 nor WPA3, consider replacing it. The FTC also recommends a guest network for visitors and leaving the router firewall enabled. - Use WPA3 Personal when available; otherwise use WPA2 Personal.
- Change default router administrator credentials and the network name.
- Install router software updates.
- Keep the router firewall on and use a guest network for visitors’ devices.
- Keep connected devices’ security features and software updates current.
When does a VPN help at home?
A VPN may be useful when you want to limit what your ISP or someone monitoring the local network can learn from traffic contents, provided the app encrypts that traffic. It is less useful as a substitute for HTTPS, router security, device updates, or careful handling of personal information. Decide based on which observer you want to limit and whether you trust the VPN provider with the traffic that passes through its service.
