For most recreational matches, mount a phone horizontally on a stable tripod behind a baseline, near the court’s centerline, and frame the entire court before play. Keep the camera fixed rather than panning after the ball. A secure fence clamp is a convenient alternative when the court has a suitable mounting point. Test the view, storage and battery before the match, and ask the other players before recording.
Choose a setup that fits the court

For an open court, a tall phone tripod with a holder—optionally with a ball head for easier leveling—is the straightforward choice. On a fenced court, use a compatible phone holder attached securely to an appropriate fence section. Keep either support outside the playing area and out of players’ paths.
Position the camera to capture the whole point
Start behind a baseline and near the centerline. PickleTip’s guide by Sid Parfait, updated August 5, 2026, suggests starting around 7–10 feet high and 8–15 feet behind the baseline. Those are practical starting ranges, not a universal standard: adjust for the phone’s lens, nearby fence, available space and court layout.
Before recording, check that both baselines, both sidelines, the kitchen lines, the net and all four players fit in the frame. A very steep downward view can make depth, movement and partner spacing harder to judge. Keep the phone fixed: for match review, preserving court geometry and the players’ positions is generally more useful than trying to follow the ball.

Use landscape orientation. PB Vision’s recording instructions suggest a wide lens or zoom level that shows the full court, commonly around 0.5x on many phones. Check your own preview rather than relying on a zoom number: phone lens options and framing differ, and the complete playing area must remain visible.
Set resolution and frame rate for your purpose
For ordinary match review, 1080p is a practical starting resolution. The right frame rate depends on the phone, lighting and intended workflow; the available guides do not establish a universal winner.

- Consider 60 fps if your phone can sustain it for the expected recording and the resulting image is clear. PickleTip recommends this as a default for its setup guidance, but advises comparing it with 30 fps indoors if 60 fps looks dark or noisy.
- Consider 30 fps if you are recording for PB Vision’s analysis workflow or want smaller files; that service recommends it for those purposes.
Use the same planned camera settings for a short test as you intend to use during the match. A one-minute test at those settings gives you a better basis for estimating file size than a generic estimate; leave extra storage for warm-up or a match that runs longer than expected.
Set up and check the recording
- Choose the support. Use a tripod on an open court, or a compatible clamp and phone holder if a suitable fence mounting point is available.
- Place it behind the baseline. Start near the centerline, outside the playing area. Raise the camera enough to see over nearby players, then adjust the distance and height until the entire court fits.
- Set landscape framing. Choose a wide enough view to include all court lines and all four players. Inspect the corners of the frame, not just the center.
- Record a short test. Confirm that the view is steady and bright enough, then play it back. Check the actual recording rather than assuming the preview tells the whole story.
- Check storage and battery. Use the test clip to estimate storage at the chosen settings and make sure the phone is ready for the expected recording length.
- Start recording and confirm it is running. If the mounted position makes the controls hard to reach, start the recording before placing the phone. Practice this sequence so the orientation and framing do not shift.
Ask before filming and check local rules
Ask your playing partners before recording. For club play, tournaments or other organized events, check the facility’s or event organizer’s recording policy directly. USA Pickleball’s rules summary links to a 2026 rulebook, but the summary does not establish a universal filming policy for every recreational court, venue or event.

What to expect from a hands-free recording
Hands-free means the camera is mounted and stays fixed during play; it does not mean that setup and framing can be skipped. A wide, steady view is useful for reviewing court coverage, player movement and positioning. If the full court does not fit, change the camera position or field of view before play rather than panning mid-point.
There is no independent comparison here showing that a particular phone, action camera or dedicated camera is best for pickleball recording. Choose based on whether the mount can safely hold it, whether it captures the full court, and whether it can record for the match at settings that work in the available light.
