For Apple’s current MacBook Air M5 lineup, choose the 13-inch model if a compact computer matters more than built-in screen space; choose the 15-inch model if you want more room for windows and media. Then select 16GB, 24GB, or 32GB of unified memory according to the demanding apps and projects you keep open, and choose storage based on the files you need available locally. There is no universally best configuration: the right one depends on how you work.
Apple’s current lineup offers 13-inch and 15-inch models, with memory configurations from 16GB to 32GB and SSD storage from 512GB to 4TB. Apple’s US product page showed a starting price of $1,299 when checked in 2026; that is not a complete price list, and prices vary by market and configuration. Check Apple’s live listing for your region before buying.
Choose 13-inch or 15-inch based on where you need screen space
The 13-inch MacBook Air M5 has a 13.6-inch display; the 15-inch has a 15.3-inch display. The larger screen gives you more built-in workspace for side-by-side windows, timelines, or media. The smaller model is the more compact choice if you prioritize carrying a smaller computer over having the larger display. Apple’s specifications consulted do not establish a weight comparison, so use the physical dimensions and your own carrying preferences rather than assuming a particular weight difference.
| Model | Built-in display | Listed GPU configuration | Battery capacity |
|---|---|---|---|
| 13-inch MacBook Air M5 | 13.6 inches | 8-core or 10-core GPU | 53.8 watt-hours |
| 15-inch MacBook Air M5 | 15.3 inches | 10-core GPU | 66.5 watt-hours |
These are Apple-published specifications, not comparative workload test results. The available information does not establish how much faster one GPU configuration is for a particular task, so don’t pay for the 10-core option on the assumption of a specific performance gain without a workload comparison that supports it.

Choose memory for your multitasking and project demands
Both sizes are offered with 16GB, 24GB, or 32GB of unified memory. Apple’s consulted specification pages list those options but do not prescribe a tier for particular jobs. As a practical decision heuristic, consider how many demanding applications you use at once and how large your active projects are—not just the name of your job.
- 16GB: Consider it if your usual work keeps a modest set of applications and projects active at a time.
- 24GB: Consider it if your routine involves heavier multitasking or larger active projects and you want more memory headroom than the base tier.
- 32GB: Consider it if you regularly keep several demanding applications or large projects open together.
These are decision prompts, not Apple recommendations or benchmark-based workload limits. If your work varies, think about your busiest typical sessions rather than an occasional light task.

Choose storage by estimating what must stay on the Mac
Both models offer 512GB, 1TB, 2TB, or 4TB SSD configurations. Estimate the local space needed for active projects, media libraries, and files you need offline, then leave room for your working files to grow. The right capacity depends on those files; the specification alone cannot determine it.
- Choose a smaller internal drive if most of your files are elsewhere and you need only a limited set locally.
- Consider a larger internal drive if active projects or media must remain available on the Mac.
- An external SSD can hold additional files, but it is a separate item to carry and does not increase the Mac’s internal capacity.
Check ports and external-display needs before ordering
Apple lists two Thunderbolt 4 ports on each size. Account for how those ports will be used by monitors, storage, and other wired accessories. The 15-inch specification consulted lists support for up to two external displays. Confirm compatibility for your exact monitors, accessories, and intended setup before purchase; the number of ports and supported displays are separate considerations.

What to expect from battery-life claims
Apple lists up to 18 hours of video streaming and up to 15 hours of wireless web use for the 13-inch M5 specification. These are manufacturer estimates under specified test conditions, not a guarantee that every configuration or workday will last that long. Apple says battery life varies by use and configuration. The 13-inch model’s listed battery capacity is 53.8 watt-hours, while the 15-inch model’s is 66.5 watt-hours; capacity alone does not establish runtime for your workload.
