Stranger Than Heaven is shaping up as a direct-action adventure built around independently controlled attacks and defenses, while Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth is an RPG. Their stories differ just as sharply: Makoto Daito’s announced saga spans five eras and cities from 1915 to 1965, whereas Infinite Wealth follows Ichiban Kasuga and Kazuma Kiryu in a single game’s story. This is a comparison of announced and previewed details, not a review: Stranger Than Heaven was still unreleased as of October 4, 2026.
Which Like a Dragon game is the comparison?
“Like a Dragon” is a series, not one fixed combat style or story. For a useful contrast, this article uses Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth for its RPG format, while noting where the wider series differs. SEGA’s catalog lists Infinite Wealth as an RPG and Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii as an action-adventure. So it would be inaccurate to say every Like a Dragon game is turn-based or to treat the franchise as a single plot. SEGA’s catalog listings distinguish the titles by genre.
How does Stranger Than Heaven’s combat differ?
Separate roles for left and right
SEGA describes Makoto’s combat as giving his left and right sides independent roles. The player can attack with one hand while defending or catching an incoming attack with the other, then counter. Announced weapons include knives, hammers, and swords. The design is intended to make offense and defense interact rather than treating every encounter as a sequence of attacks alone. SEGA’s announcement outlines the system.
Direct action, not Infinite Wealth’s RPG format
In a June 2026 hands-on preview, Xbox Wire described shoulder and trigger controls for left- and right-sided light and heavy attacks, alongside weapons, grapples, blocks, parries, and dodges. The preview also noted a grounded defense and recovery sequence. Those details come from a limited demo, not a final-game review, so they show how the system was presented and played in preview—not every mechanic or its final balance. Xbox Wire’s demo preview gives the control examples.

By contrast, SEGA classifies Infinite Wealth as an RPG. That genre distinction is the clearest supported comparison here: Stranger Than Heaven has been presented with immediate, player-directed attacks and defenses, while Infinite Wealth is framed as an RPG. This does not describe every entry in the franchise; SEGA categorizes Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii as an action-adventure.
What the producer’s comparison does—and does not—mean
In a September 2026 GamesRadar+ interview, Stranger Than Heaven producer Hiroyuki Sakamoto said the team wanted combat to be “more intuitive and more rough.” He contrasted that intention with some Yakuza-style fighting, saying that button pressing could sometimes carry a player through. That is a producer’s explanation of the intended design, not an objective assessment of every Like a Dragon game or a measured comparison of difficulty. GamesRadar+ reports Sakamoto’s remarks.

How do the stories differ?
Stranger Than Heaven: Makoto’s five-decade journey
Stranger Than Heaven begins in San Francisco in 1915. Makoto Daito, born to an American father and Japanese mother, loses his parents and becomes isolated before setting out for Japan in search of a better life. SEGA describes the game as a 50-year struggle to find a place to call home. Its official settings move across five eras and cities:
- 1915: Kokura, Fukuoka
- 1929: Kure, Hiroshima
- 1943: Minami, Osaka
- 1951: Atami, Shizuoka
- 1965: Shinjuku, Tokyo
The San Francisco opening and the five Japanese settings are described in SEGA’s announcement and the official Xbox listing. The announced span gives the story a broad historical sweep, but marketing descriptions alone do not establish the full plot, ending, or historical accuracy.

Infinite Wealth: one installment’s story, not the whole series
Infinite Wealth is a specific RPG entry, so it offers a more precise comparison than an umbrella summary of Like a Dragon. The meaningful distinction supported by the available details is structural: Stranger Than Heaven is announced as Makoto’s journey across five decades and cities, while the comparison point is one named Like a Dragon installment. The series contains distinct games and protagonists; there is no single franchise-wide plot synopsis that captures them all.
Stranger Than Heaven also ties music to progression
Its announced gameplay extends beyond fighting. Makoto’s musical talent develops into showman work: players collect sounds in the world, combine them into tracks, find performers through street rumors, and arrange shows with choices such as sets, cast, lighting, and staging. These systems connect his working life and performances to the larger story rather than making combat the only announced activity. Xbox Wire’s September feature describes these elements as planned gameplay, not a report on the completed game. The Xbox Wire feature on the cast and story provides the details.
