Play Control if you want another Remedy game in the same supernatural universe; choose Alan Wake Remastered if you want more of Alan’s backstory. Neither is required to understand Alan Wake 2. For a different horror experience, consider Resident Evil 2, Silent Hill 2, or SOMA based on the kind of tension and atmosphere you want.

The three non-Remedy picks are examples of community recommendations from a discussion about what horror game to play after Alan Wake 2. They are useful starting points, not evidence of a universal best choice. The same discussion also mentions Alien: Isolation.
Play Control for the closest shared-universe follow-up
Control is the strongest choice if the part you want to continue is Remedy’s strange supernatural world rather than Alan’s particular story. Remedy’s official game page identifies it as a supernatural third-person action-adventure, while PlayStation describes it as part of the same universe as Alan Wake. Its AWE expansion develops that crossover, as noted in PlayStation’s Alan Wake 2 announcement.
Expect a different balance of play: Control is framed as an action-adventure, so it is a better match for supernatural combat and connected fiction than for a repeat of Alan Wake 2’s survival-horror structure.

Play Alan Wake Remastered for optional backstory
If you want to revisit Alan’s earlier story, Remedy’s Alan Wake Remastered is the direct route. Remedy describes it as an episodic psychological action-thriller about Alan searching for his missing wife. The official page lists its release year as 2021.
It is not required before or after Alan Wake 2. Remedy creative director Sam Lake said in a PlayStation.Blog interview that playing earlier games is not necessary to enjoy Alan Wake 2, though they add backstory. That matches the sequel’s design: Lake says Alan and Saga’s parallel stories introduce newcomers to the supernatural lore while giving returning players connections to find.

Alan Wake 2 does not require a sequel-play order
Alan Wake 2 is Remedy’s first survival-horror game, according to Lake’s discussion of the game. It follows two parallel stories across two worlds, with Alan and Saga as protagonists. Lake describes the game as designed to stand alone while still rewarding fans who recognize connections. In his words, “It’s important to us that Alan Wake 2 works as a stand-alone experience but also has a ton of connections for our fans to find.”
So there is no mandatory order. Pick Control for more of the connected setting, Alan Wake Remastered for Alan’s earlier story, or leave Remedy’s universe entirely if what you want is simply another kind of horror.

Consider the Alan Wake 2 expansions for more of the same world
If you want to stay with Alan Wake 2 rather than start another game, its expansions Night Springs and The Lake House extend the experience. TIME reported in 2024 that the two add around four hours of gameplay in total; this is TIME’s estimate, not a universal completion-time measurement. TIME describes Night Springs as three self-contained episodes and The Lake House as extending the Alan Wake–Control connection. See its 2024 coverage for that account.

Remedy’s games catalog lists CONTROL Resonant among upcoming titles. An Xbox Wire preview dated March 4, 2026 describes Dylan Faden as its protagonist and Manhattan as a setting affected by the Hiss. Those sources identify it as upcoming, so do not treat it as an available game without checking current release information.
