To fix an ITC mismatch, first match documents individually, then identify whether the difference is due to timing, an incorrect supplier filing, an amendment or credit note, an IMS action, or an eligibility issue. You cannot edit GSTR-2B yourself: supplier-reported errors generally require the supplier to correct its filing, while your claim and return treatment must be decided separately under the applicable GST rules.

What a GSTR-2B mismatch does—and does not—mean

GSTR-2B is an auto-drafted, read-only statement based on supplier and Input Service Distributor filings, along with import information received from ICEGATE. It is intended to help you determine the right input tax credit (ITC) to report in the corresponding GSTR-3B, but it is not a document you can edit and it does not, by itself, establish that every listed credit is legally claimable.

The GST portal advises taxpayers to reconcile GSTR-2B with their own records and books, avoid claiming credit twice for a document, reverse credit where required by the Act and Rules, and pay tax due under reverse charge. A difference is therefore a signal to investigate—not proof on its own that either your books or the supplier’s return is wrong.

Reconcile the statement in a controlled sequence

  1. Fix the period and preserve the source files

Download the GSTR-2B statement in Excel or JSON from the GST portal and compare it with your purchase register and books for the same period. Save the statement, register extract, and reconciliation version together so you can trace later amendments or changes in treatment.

  2. Match documents before comparing totals

Compare records using supplier GSTIN, invoice or debit-note number and date, document type, taxable value, and tax amounts. Check the same identifying fields in both sources before deciding that a record is absent or incorrect. A total-only comparison can conceal a duplicate, an amendment, or unrelated differences that happen to offset one another.

  3. Classify every variance

Assign each difference a specific reason rather than combining all discrepancies into one unexplained balance. Useful categories include:

    • Document in your books but missing from GSTR-2B

    • Duplicate document in your books or statement
    • Filing or statement-period timing difference
    • Supplier amendment or credit note
    • Import, ISD, or reverse-charge item
    • IMS action or status difference
    • Possible ITC ineligibility or required reversal
  4. Keep a workpaper for follow-up

For each open item, record the period, document identifiers, amount in your books, amount in GSTR-2B, variance category, action owner, follow-up status, and final return treatment. This makes it easier to separate a supplier correction request from an IMS action or an eligibility decision.

Resolve common mismatch causes

What you find What to check What to do
Invoice is in your purchase register but not in the period’s GSTR-2B Check the supplier’s filing date against the applicable cut-off and inspect later open statements for the document. If it is a timing difference, track it into the statement where it appears. If it remains missing, send the supplier the document identifiers and request that they verify and correct the applicable filing.
Invoice appears, but taxable value or tax amount differs Compare the filed document details with your invoice and books; check for an amendment, credit note, or a tax amount or place-of-supply discrepancy. Ask the supplier to correct the outward-supply details through the applicable GSTR-1, GSTR-1A, or IFF route. Do not change GSTR-2B, which is read-only.
Document appears more than once or the books and statement totals do not align Match document numbers and dates, and inspect amendment details rather than relying only on the summary total. Remove any duplicate from the reconciliation and ensure you do not claim the same document’s credit twice.
Credit note or amended invoice changes the period total Compare the original and revised document details and the amendment summary. For amendment tables, the summary reflects the differential amount—amended minus original—while the document details show revised information with reference to the original. Reconcile the original and amended records together; do not assume a surprising summary amount means the underlying document is missing.
Record has an IMS action or status change Check whether the record is accepted, rejected, pending, or deemed accepted, and whether an action or change occurred after draft GSTR-2B generation. Follow the current portal advisory for recomputing GSTR-2B after applicable changes and for sequencing original and amended records before filing the relevant GSTR-3B.
Item relates to imports, ISD, or reverse charge Check the relevant statement category and source record instead of treating it as an ordinary domestic supplier invoice. Reconcile it in its appropriate category and account for reverse-charge tax due as required.
Document is present but may not meet ITC conditions Assess the transaction against applicable statutory conditions and restrictions, not just the statement’s availability indicator. Claim, defer, or reverse the amount as required by the applicable law and rules, and retain the reasoning in your workpaper.

Distinguish a timing lag from a supplier error

GSTR-2B is generated on the 14th of the succeeding month for monthly recipients. For quarterly recipients, it is generated on the 14th of the succeeding month of the quarter. The GST portal FAQ explains that supplier documents filed after the applicable cut-off can move into the next open statement. A document absent from one period may therefore be a timing difference rather than an omission.

Check the supplier’s filing date and the relevant cut-off, then look in later statements for the document. If it does not appear, or if the reported amount or details are wrong, share the invoice or debit-note identifiers and the precise discrepancy with the supplier. The recipient cannot insert or correct supplier data in GSTR-2B. The e-invoice portal also identifies tax amount and place-of-supply discrepancies as potential ITC risks and advises reporting them to the supplier promptly.

Handle amendments and credit notes at document level

An amended record can make a period summary look counterintuitive if you compare only totals. The GST portal FAQ says amendment-table summaries show the differential amount, calculated as amended minus original, while the document details show the revised information with a reference to the original document.

Check IMS actions and recompute GSTR-2B when required

The Invoice Management System (IMS) can affect what is reflected in GSTR-2B. Under the revised advisory, a record with no action at GSTR-2B generation is deemed accepted. Certain later actions or changes require GSTR-2B to be recomputed; the advisory also sets sequencing requirements for original and amended records across periods. GSTR-2B generation is sequential and conditioned on filing the prior period’s GSTR-3B.

Make the ITC eligibility decision separately

GSTR-2B has an ITC-available summary and an ITC-not-available summary. The latter covers specified cases; the GST portal cautions that other legal restrictions may still apply. A document’s presence in the available section is not a guarantee that you can claim the credit.

After reconciling the document and resolving filing or IMS issues, assess the applicable ITC conditions and any required reversals. Use the relevant GSTR-2B categories and GSTR-3B mappings, avoid duplicate credit, and pay tax due under reverse charge. Some system-populated GSTR-3B values remain editable; if you edit a value, retain a clear workpaper showing the basis for the amount reported.

Final filing checks

  • Each difference is matched to a document or assigned a clear unresolved reason.
  • Timing items have been checked against the applicable cut-off and later statements.
  • Supplier errors have been sent to the supplier with exact identifiers and discrepancy details.
  • Amendments, credit notes, and IMS actions have been reviewed at document level.
  • ITC eligibility and reversals have been assessed independently of GSTR-2B appearance.
  • No document’s credit is claimed twice, and reverse-charge tax due is accounted for.
  • The final GSTR-3B amounts can be traced to the reconciliation workpaper.
