Huawei’s China-region specifications list a 50 MP variable-aperture main camera, a 40 MP ultra-wide camera, a 200 MP telephoto camera, and features including Super Night, Super Macro, Pro, and RAW capture. Exact controls can vary by mode and software, so check what is available in your installed camera app.
What the Mate 90 Pro Max camera offers
Huawei’s China-region product specifications describe this hardware and its listed features; they are manufacturer specifications, not independent performance tests. Huawei’s Mate 90 Pro Max specifications list:
- Main camera: 50 MP, variable aperture from f/1.4 to f/4.0, optical image stabilization (OIS), and RYYB color-filter technology.
- Ultra-wide camera: 40 MP, f/2.2, and RYYB.
- Telephoto camera: 200 MP, f/2.6, OIS, and tele-macro capability.
- Color camera: a third-generation red maple color camera.
The same specifications list portrait, Super Night, Super Macro, Pro, RAW, high-pixel, long-exposure, AI composition, and motion-related features. A feature being listed does not mean every setting is available in every mode.
Settings to use for common scenes
Everyday daytime photos
Begin in standard Photo mode and tap the main subject to focus. Keep exposure natural rather than brightening the whole frame to rescue a small dark area. If you switch to Pro mode and ISO control is available, Huawei’s general guidance is to use a lower ISO in bright conditions to reduce added image noise. This is general Huawei advice, not a tested Mate 90 Pro Max setting.

People, pets, and other moving subjects
If Pro mode on your phone offers AF-C, try it for continuous focus on a moving subject. Use a faster shutter speed to reduce motion blur. A faster shutter lets in less light, however, so you may need a higher ISO; choose the lowest ISO that still lets you capture a sharp frame in the available light. Huawei’s recommendations are generic, and the specific controls should be confirmed in the camera app. Huawei’s Pro mode guidance also cautions that changing one setting can sometimes change others, so check the resulting exposure rather than assuming controls act independently.
Portraits
Try Portrait mode for a portrait-style rendering. Where the framing suits it, the telephoto camera can provide a tighter perspective without moving as close to the subject. The official specifications list Portrait mode and an OIS telephoto camera, but they do not establish a guaranteed blur effect or a particular best focal length.

Close-ups
Try Super Macro or the listed tele-macro capability for close subjects. Move the phone slowly and check the subject’s focus on the screen before taking the picture. The consulted specifications do not establish a minimum focusing distance.
Night scenes
If Super Night is visible in your installed camera app, try it for a dim scene and hold the phone steady while capturing. Huawei lists Super Night in the product specifications. Its Night mode support article lists Mate 80 and Pura 90 families with HarmonyOS 6.0/6.1, not the Mate 90 Pro Max, so that article does not confirm a model-specific button sequence for this phone.

Choosing Pro controls: shutter, ISO, and metering
Pro mode can help when the automatic result does not suit the scene, but use the controls as a set: changing one may affect another. Huawei’s general Pro guidance describes these practical trade-offs:

These are general principles, not confirmed descriptions of the current Mate 90 Pro Max menu. Check which options your installed app exposes. Huawei’s support article notes: “Changing a specific setting will sometimes cause other settings to change as well. Adjust them according to your actual requirements.”

RAW or JPG: which should you choose?
Choose RAW/DNG when you plan to edit the image and have storage to spare. RAW retains more editing latitude, according to Huawei’s general Pro guidance. Choose JPG when you want smaller files that are ready to share. The Mate 90 Pro Max specifications list RAW capture, but the exact options can depend on the mode and software; check the format choices shown by your camera app.

Huawei lists camera focal lengths equivalent to approximately 13 mm, 24 mm, and 89 mm, along with 8x optical-quality zoom and up to 100x digital zoom. For detail, select a native camera view suited to the subject and framing. Treat extreme digital zoom primarily as a way to frame distant subjects, not as a guarantee of fine detail; that is a practical caution, not a tested result.

What the specifications cannot tell you
Huawei’s product page notes that product details may be revised and that actual results can vary with software, conditions, and the device. The listed hardware and modes therefore do not establish the precise menu labels, availability of every Pro control, or best setting for a particular scene. Start with the mode that fits your subject, then make a small adjustment and review the image on-screen.
