Mod creators who object to AI-generated reuploads often object to more than AI: they may be concerned that their work was reused without permission, stripped of its original credit and terms, or presented with a misleading account of who made it. To check whether a mod reupload is allowed, find the original file’s permission terms and verify that they cover the specific use and destination. An AI disclosure tag is not permission to reuse someone else’s work.
Why do some mod creators oppose AI-generated reuploads?
A reupload can separate a mod from the context its author supplied: permission terms, attribution, update information, dependencies, and support expectations. If an uploader uses generative AI to recreate or transform another creator’s assets or voice, rights and consent concerns may also arise. Those are possible reasons for objection, not evidence that every creator opposes AI or that every AI-assisted mod is unauthorized.
Nexus Mods’ May 2, 2023 statement on AI-generated content in modding acknowledged concerns from affected creators and rights holders. At that time, the site said AI-generated mod content was not automatically against its rules, while allowing removal after a credible complaint. It encouraged creators to use tools only with explicit permission for all assets. That statement is historical context; the site’s current File Submission Guidelines set out its present requirements.
What do Nexus Mods’ current rules require?
Nexus Mods prohibits submitting existing user-submitted content without permission from its original author. Credit is required unless waived, but credit alone is not permission: the guidelines say “the mere accreditation of an author is no substitute for receiving explicit permission to upload or modify someone else’s content.” Permission is specific to each file. If the author has not supplied permission information, assume you need to ask before using it.

The guidelines, last updated September 29, 2026, distinguish three AI categories:
- AI-Generated Content: generated material used in the mod, including code, voices, dialogue, translations, music, and in-game assets.
- AI Media: AI-generated promotional material, such as thumbnails or descriptions.
- AI Assisted: limited AI involvement, such as upscaling a texture or audio. The guidelines require evidence to use this tag.
The guidelines say undisclosed generative AI use may be subject to moderation. These categories concern disclosure and classification; they do not grant permission to upload, adapt, or reuse another creator’s work.

How can you tell whether a mod reupload is authorized?
Check the original file’s terms against what the uploader plans to do. Permission for one action or destination does not automatically cover another: a license to translate a mod, for example, is not necessarily permission to port it, combine it with another mod, or reuse its assets.
- Find the original file and author. Start at the original author’s page or the source file page. Do not treat a familiar hosting site, copied credits, or a polished description as proof of authorization.
- Read that file’s permission settings and custom terms. Check whether they permit the exact action—such as reuploading, porting, translating, modifying, combining, or reusing assets—and the intended destination.
- Check the scope and conditions. Permission might allow redistribution broadly, apply only to a particular platform, or be limited to named accounts. Look for conditions on alterations or combinations.
- Ask if the terms are silent or unclear. Contact the author through the platform and wait for explicit permission before reuploading or adapting the work.
- Check AI disclosure separately. An AI tag may satisfy a host’s categorization requirement, but it does not demonstrate that the uploader has permission to use the underlying mod or assets.
Keep the original source page and permission record with a permitted port so readers and moderators can verify the terms.

What must a Bethesda.net porter verify?
Bethesda’s Community Standards say: “Only upload your creations. – Do not upload content from third party websites unless you have permission from the original creator.” Its guidance also says not to upload mods, or mods that take content from other mods, without creator permission.
If the porter is not an author or co-author, Bethesda requires the port description to identify the original authors and link to the source mod. If permission is posted elsewhere, the description must link to it as well. Permission must be publicly available on the site hosting the mod. For newer ports, Bethesda generally does not accept screenshots of private messages or conversations on social media and chat services as permission evidence. See the Bethesda support guidance for its porting requirements.

Read the permission itself rather than assuming it covers every port. Some authors give blanket permission for any site, Bethesda.net, or consoles specifically. Others require individual approval and may limit permission to a named account. Terms can also prohibit changes or combining the mod with other work, or require additional approval. Confirm that the public permission covers the destination and the exact use.

- Can you identify the original author and source file?
- Does the permission statement apply to that exact file and the intended action?
- Does it cover the destination platform, and is it blanket permission or approval for a specific account?
- Are there conditions on editing, combining, or reusing assets?
- For a Bethesda.net port, is permission publicly available on the hosting site, with the source and authors linked in the port description?
- Have you checked AI disclosure rules separately from the permission terms?
If any answer is unclear, the permission is absent, or its scope is too narrow, do not treat the upload as authorized; ask the author for explicit approval. Platform rules can change, so check the live file terms and the destination host’s current guidance for the specific mod.
