To repair a Steam copy of Total War: WARHAMMER III after a mod causes problems, disable or remove the suspect mod, then use Steam’s Verify integrity of game files option. Steam checks the game installation and replaces missing or damaged files when needed. Protect your saves first: a campaign that depends on the removed mod may not continue normally.

Before you start: protect your save and confirm your storefront

The steps below are for a Steam installation. If your campaign uses the mod you plan to remove, back up your saves before changing anything. SEGA warns that a mod-dependent save may require starting a new campaign after the mod is removed. Do not assume the save will remain playable without it.

Steam’s menu labels and repair steps do not necessarily apply to Epic Games Store or Microsoft Store/Xbox app installations. Use the support instructions for your storefront rather than applying Steam’s procedure to another version.

Disable or remove the mod that may have caused the problem

Steam Workshop mod

Use the relevant Steam or in-game mod controls to disable the suspected Workshop mod. If you unsubscribe, Steam may remove the downloaded Workshop item; make sure you know which mod you are changing before doing so.

Manually installed mod files

SEGA says manually installed mod files may be in the game installation’s data or mods folder. Move the suspected mod files somewhere outside the game folder, or remove them if you can identify them confidently. Avoid deleting unfamiliar files: they may belong to the game.

Verify the Steam installation

  1. Open Steam and select Library.
  2. Right-click Total War: WARHAMMER III and select Properties.
  3. Open Installed Files.
  4. Select Verify integrity of game files.
  5. Let the scan finish before launching the game. Steam says verification may take several minutes; the duration is not guaranteed.

Steam compares the installation with its expected game files and restores files it finds missing or damaged. Run only one game verification at a time, and avoid running it while other intensive system tasks are underway.

Understand a failed-file notice

A verification result saying that one or more files failed to verify does not automatically mean the main installation is still broken. Steam explains: “This is normal for most Steam games. The files that fail to verify are local configuration files that should not be replaced as part of this process.” If the game still has the original problem, continue troubleshooting rather than treating that message alone as proof of damage.

Test the game, then check mods one at a time

Launch the game with the suspect mod disabled. If the problem is gone, re-enable only mods that are compatible with the current game version, one at a time, testing after each change. A mod author may not have updated a mod for a newer version of the game, so a mod that worked previously can become incompatible after an update.

If the problem persists, isolate preferences and cached data

SEGA recommends backing up the game folder under C:UsersYOURUSERNAMEAppDataRoamingThe Creative Assembly, moving the folder aside, and then testing the game. Replace YOURUSERNAME with your Windows account name. Keep the backup intact while testing. If moving the folder resolves the issue, SEGA’s guide says you can copy the save folder back; preserve a separate save backup before doing so.

Check antivirus interference and escalate if needed

Steam notes that verification can restore installation files deleted or corrupted by antivirus software. If your antivirus flagged a file, take the detection seriously and consult the antivirus provider. Do not reflexively disable protection or create an exclusion for a file you cannot verify.

If the game still fails after verification and mod isolation, gather the exact error message, what you tried, your mod list, and relevant diagnostic files before contacting SEGA support. For a Steam copy, use SEGA’s Steam troubleshooting guide as the next reference.
