Protect a book-style foldable by checking for debris before closing it, handling the inner display gently, leaving its factory-fitted screen film in place, and keeping grit and liquids away. A compatible case can help protect the phone’s exterior, but it cannot be relied on to shield the inner screen from pressure or debris.
How do I protect my foldable phone screen?
The inner display is flexible and needs more careful handling than a conventional phone screen. Samsung’s guidance for its foldables offers a practical routine; check your own model’s manual for device-specific warnings.
Check the gap before closing the phone
Before folding, look for anything between the displays, including cards, coins, keys, dust, or grit. An object trapped inside can scratch or puncture the main screen. Samsung’s foldable care guidance and the Galaxy Z Fold6 user manual warn against closing the phone with foreign objects between its screens.
Use a light touch and let the hinge move normally
Do not press the inner display with a fingernail, pen, or other hard or sharp object. Avoid excessive pressure, particularly around the crease. Fold and unfold the device normally; do not force the hinge or fold the phone backward. These handling precautions appear in Samsung’s foldable-device precautions.

Keep the installed inner-screen film in place
Samsung says the fitted inner-screen protector is designed for the folding display and advises against removing it or adding unapproved films and stickers. If the film is damaged or needs replacement, follow the instructions for your exact model and consult the manufacturer or an authorized service provider rather than peeling it off or applying a generic protector.
Keep grit and liquids away
Small particles such as sand can damage a foldable, and Samsung says the models covered by its US care guidance are not dust resistant. Water resistance varies by model and does not make beach or pool use safe: Samsung’s US guidance warns against beach or pool use for the identified IP48 models, while its Philippines page gives different, older-model-specific precautions. Check the rating and care instructions for your exact phone; do not treat one generation’s rating as universal.

Clean the hinge gently
If the hinge is dusty or dirty, Samsung advises gently wiping it with a soft, dry cloth. The reviewed care guidance does not support using tools, liquids, or compressed air, or opening the hinge to clean inside it.
Does a case protect the hinge and inner screen?
A case is for exterior protection, not a guarantee against damage inside the phone. Samsung recommends protective cases in its Fold6 business guidance, and offers model-dependent accessories. The available guidance does not establish that hinge-cover cases are universally better than slim or rugged designs, or that any case prevents inner-screen punctures, pressure damage, or hinge failure.

When choosing a book-style foldable phone case, check the exact model compatibility and consider:
- How much of the exterior and hinge the case covers, and how much bulk it adds.
- Whether buttons, ports, cameras, and wireless charging remain accessible and usable.
- Whether the design suits how you hold and carry the phone.
Keep the inner-screen film installed regardless of the case you choose. A case does not replace the habit of checking the gap before folding.

What Samsung’s fold-count figure does—and does not—tell you
Samsung Business Insights stated in its 2024 article that “Galaxy Z Fold6 is tested and verified for at least 200,000 folds or 10 years of average use.” This is Samsung’s manufacturer test claim for the Galaxy Z Fold6, not a guaranteed service life or an independent durability result for all foldables. It should not be used to predict how long another model will last.
Check model and regional guidance before relying on a rating
Foldable specifications and care warnings differ by model and market. Samsung’s US page lists different dust and water information across Fold and Flip generations; its Philippines page describes IPX8 conditions for the specific older generations it covers, including up to 1.5 m of fresh water for up to 30 minutes. That older-model detail is not a current rating for every Fold and does not mean dust is harmless. Use your exact model’s official manual and local support page for its rating and precautions.
If repair-cost protection is a concern, Samsung Business Insights mentions a protection plan and Galaxy Z Assurance as examples. Availability, eligibility, terms, and pricing are not established for every region or current device, so confirm current local terms directly with the manufacturer or carrier before relying on coverage.
