Recommended Free Tools
Steam does not use one switch for every alert and recommendation. For general client alerts, open Steam > Settings > Notifications; for chat and invite alerts, use Do Not Disturb in Friends & Chat; and to stop seeing a particular game in recommendations, mark that game as ignored. The right setting depends on what appeared and where.
Choose the control that matches what you saw
| What you want to change | Where to look | What it affects |
|---|---|---|
| Client notification toasts or sounds | Steam > Settings > Notifications | Notification types and, depending on the current client controls, where or whether they appear |
| Chat, invite, or request alerts | Friends & Chat settings > Do Not Disturb | Notifications from chat, invites, and other requests |
| Startup announcement about game changes or releases | Steam > Settings > Interface | The announcement described by a Steam Community path from March 2024; the label may have changed |
| A particular game in Store recommendations | Mark the product as ignored | Future recommendations and featured spots for that product |
| Recommendation themes or genres | Store Preferences, including Tags to exclude | Recommendation preferences; exact labels may vary |
Turn off or limit client notifications
- Open the Steam client and select Steam > Settings > Notifications.
- Find the notification type you want to change and adjust its display or sound controls. Steam’s June 14, 2023 client update described controls for choosing which notifications appear and where; its July 10, 2023 update documented a rearranged settings page, controls tied to global settings, and a toggle for sounds on non-critical notifications. Steam’s client update notes describe those changes.
- Check the labels and available controls in your installed client. Steam has changed this page’s layout and behavior, so an older guide may not match your screen exactly.
These client controls are for notification categories. They do not by themselves remove Store recommendations.
Silence chat, invite, and request alerts
- Open Friends & Chat.
- Select the gear icon beside your profile name to open Friends & Chat settings.
- Enable Do Not Disturb if you do not want notifications from chat, invites, and other requests.
Steam’s Friends & Chat FAQ defines Do Not Disturb in those terms. It is a control for those alerts, not the general notification settings page or a Store recommendation filter.
Hide the startup announcement about games and releases
A Steam Community reply dated March 2–3, 2024 gives this path for the startup announcement: Steam > Settings > Interface, then turn off “Notify me about additions or changes to my games, new releases, and upcoming releases.” The exact wording can vary in a newer client, so look for the corresponding Interface option if the label is different. The guidance concerns that startup announcement only; it does not establish that chat, wishlist, or all other Steam notifications are disabled. See the cited Steam Community discussion.

Change game recommendations
Exclude one unwanted game
Open the product’s Steam Store page or find it in your Discovery Queue, then use the option to mark it as ignored. Steam’s Discovery Update says an ignored product is excluded from future recommendations and featured spots. This is the most direct choice when, for example, you tried a horror game and do not want that particular title suggested again.
Exclude a type of game
Community guidance points to Store Preferences and Tags to exclude for tuning recommendations across a category. Open Store Preferences from your profile menu and review the current preference controls. This adjusts what kinds of games you are more likely to see; it is distinct from ignoring one product.

The cited Steam documentation establishes product-level ignoring and preference controls, not a universal switch that removes recommendations from every Store surface.
Adjust language-related recommendations only when relevant
If recommendations seem mismatched because of language, Steam Support directs users to the profile menu’s Store Preferences > Language Preferences to adjust secondary or additional game languages. This setting concerns Store language preferences, not notification alerts. Steam Support’s language preferences guidance describes the path.

Settings that will not solve these problems
Steam Support places download options under Steam > Settings > Downloads. That is a separate settings area; use Notifications, Friends & Chat, Interface, or Store Preferences according to the issue instead. Steam Support’s Downloads guidance covers that separate category.
