The right space RPG depends on which part of the experience matters most: Mass Effect Legendary Edition is the strongest fit for a story-led trilogy with choices that carry forward, Starfield for a customizable RPG sandbox with dialogue, exploration, and combat, and No Man’s Sky for open-ended exploration and survival with space and planetary fights. These games offer different balances rather than one universal “best.”
How to choose a space RPG
“Space RPG” can describe either a tightly authored narrative or a broad exploration sandbox. Decide which experience you want before comparing the games: do you want decisions to shape a connected story, freedom to build a character and explore, or a procedurally generated galaxy to roam?
- Prioritize lasting story choices: start with Mass Effect Legendary Edition.
- Prioritize a customizable RPG with dialogue and varied combat: consider Starfield.
- Prioritize roaming, discovery, and survival: consider No Man’s Sky.
Best space RPGs by play style
Mass Effect Legendary Edition: best for connected story choices
EA’s collection brings together Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, and Mass Effect 3, along with more than 40 DLC items. Its defining fit for this shortlist is the trilogy’s connected narrative: EA says, “Your choices seamlessly travel from one game to the next.” That makes it the clearest choice here for players who want decisions to carry across a story rather than simply choose where to roam. EA’s Mass Effect Legendary Edition page describes the bundle and choice carryover.
Choose it if a story-led trilogy and consequential decisions are your priority. The official product description establishes the contents and choice carryover, not a comparative measure of combat quality or playtime.

Starfield: best for a customizable RPG sandbox
Xbox presents Starfield as a role-playing game built around character customization, dialogue, choices, exploration, and combat. Its description calls out zero-G combat and boost-pack movement, giving players distinct ways to engage with fights and move through environments. Xbox’s Starfield page is the source for those features and its edition framing.
Choose it if you want an RPG sandbox combining character-building, conversations, exploration, and combat rather than a trilogy whose main appeal is narrative continuity. Check the current store listing for your platform and region before buying; supported editions and availability can change.

Its official materials also identify space dogfighting and first-person planetary combat, so exploration is not the only activity on offer. The developer’s About page and Press page provide its game framing and combat details.
Choose it if open-ended discovery and survival matter more than a tightly authored sequence of story choices. Hello Games also highlights ongoing updates; consult the current platform store listing for the latest edition and availability information.

| Game | Choice and story | Exploration | Combat | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mass Effect Legendary Edition | Choices carry from one game to the next, according to EA. | Story-led trilogy; official product page does not characterize it as procedurally generated roaming. | Combat is part of the series, but the cited EA page does not establish a comparative quality ranking. | Players who want a connected, story-led trilogy with choices. |
| Starfield | Xbox highlights dialogue and choice in its RPG description. | Exploration is an official feature; the cited Xbox page does not provide a comparable measure of its scope. | Xbox cites zero-G combat and boost-pack movement. | Players who want customization, role-playing, exploration, and combat in one sandbox. |
| No Man’s Sky | The cited Hello Games pages frame it around exploration and survival, not trilogy-spanning choices. | Procedurally generated galaxy, as described by Hello Games. | Space dogfighting and first-person planetary combat, according to Hello Games. | Players who want open-ended exploration and survival with combat. |
