For school-fee payments in India, the best option is the one your school accepts, your bank or card issuer allows for the amount due, and whose charges and confirmation you can verify before paying. UPI may support a higher limit for qualifying educational-institution merchants, but that ceiling is conditional; card and net-banking availability varies by school. A successful payment authorization also does not necessarily mean the school has already posted it to your fee account.
How the payment methods compare
| Method | What is established | What to check before paying |
|---|---|---|
| UPI | NPCI’s general FAQ gives a limit of up to ₹1 lakh per transaction. RBI records an enhanced ₹5 lakh limit for payments to educational institutions, while NPCI’s later circular conditions that ceiling on qualifying verified merchants and allows banks to set lower internal limits. NPCI FAQ; RBI Annual Report; NPCI circular | Whether the school is configured in the qualifying category, your bank or UPI app’s applicable limit, and the amount and any charge shown on the final payment screen. |
| Debit or credit card | Federal Bank’s E-Fee service lists card payments through its fee portal. This is an example of one provider’s acceptance, not evidence that all schools accept cards. Federal Bank E-Fee | Whether your school accepts your card type, your issuer’s limit, and any fee displayed at checkout. A credit-card payment may also have repayment costs under your card terms. |
| Net banking | Federal Bank lists internet banking through its Easy Payments portal for fee payment; availability depends on the school’s chosen setup. Federal Bank E-Fee | Whether your bank appears in the payment flow, the confirmation you receive, any disclosed charge, and how the school records the payment. |
The available sources do not establish a universal card surcharge, net-banking limit, or fee schedule for school payments. The school’s own checkout flow is the practical source for what is currently offered and disclosed.
What UPI limit applies to a school fee?
NPCI’s FAQ states a general UPI transaction limit of up to ₹1 lakh. For educational-institution payments, RBI’s 2023 annual report records an enhanced ceiling of ₹5 lakh per transaction. NPCI’s later circular makes clear that the higher limit is not automatic for every school or payer: the merchant must be verified and in a specified category, and a bank may impose a lower internal limit. So, a fee above ₹1 lakh might still be payable through UPI if the school and bank support the qualifying education-payment arrangement, but the ₹5 lakh figure is a ceiling, not a promise that your transaction will go through. Check the amount allowed in your app and confirm the displayed payee is the school or its authorized payment provider.

Are there fees for paying school fees?
In a Ministry of Finance statement dated 8 August 2026, the Government said: “No charges for users: Consumers making payments will not face any transaction charges.” The release discusses possible limited, threshold-based merchant MDR and further legislative and committee steps; it does not establish that a new charge has been introduced for UPI school-fee payments. That policy statement should not be confused with a school or payment provider separately displaying a convenience charge in its checkout flow. Review the total amount before confirming, and do not assume that merchant-side payment costs are automatically charged to the parent. For cards and net banking, the sources here do not establish a universal school-fee charge.

When is a payment received versus posted by the school?
There can be two distinct events: the payment is authorized or confirmed by the payment system, and the school later reconciles it and records it against the student’s fee account. The date of the first does not by itself establish when the second will happen.
RBI’s discussion paper describes how payment aggregators can pool and transfer merchant funds after a time lag, but it does not promise a school-specific payout or posting schedule. What to check before you authorize payment
- Confirm the school’s options. Open the official fee-payment link or portal and check whether it offers UPI, your card type, or your bank’s net-banking option.
- Check the allowed amount. For UPI, verify your bank or app limit and whether the school’s merchant setup supports the qualifying education-payment ceiling. For cards, check your available issuer limit.
- Review the final amount. Before authorizing, verify the payee, student or invoice reference, total due, and any charge shown on screen.
- Save the confirmation. Keep the receipt, transaction reference, or bank confirmation so you can follow up if the school account does not update.
- Check the school’s posting instructions. If payment is confirmed but the fee account is not updated, use the school’s stated reconciliation or support process and provide the transaction reference.
